Four Memphis M3's & a T2500-1bd Build Log

Recommended Posts

Hey guys what sup, This is my (re)build log for my Four 10" Memphis M3's

Day 1:

First had to start out taking the old build out. Same parts, just a different box and different layout. Will be doing ANOTHER new box soon just to go with ported instead of sealed, but right now just practicing on my box making skills.

First box was heavy as all hell, it had like triple support in it that was necessary which added a good 20lbs of MDF

I was doing a demo for a guy, and he saw my box and said $90 for it. Box wasn't carpeted or nothing. Had lots of markups on it and was built with left over MDF all in all probably cost me $25. So I let him have it, wanting to do a rebuild anyways.

Wish I had actual pictures of it, but I don't. Shame on me.

Anyways, spent a while removing the system, cleaning everything up. Look at suspension differences!

This is before Box and Subs were removed

This is after they were removed!

I noticed almost a 3/4" difference in suspension. I think it was like 5/8" higher after I removed it. ( hmmm ideas for a body drop ? ) Oh yeah, forgot to mention, theres a XS D6500 in the back, weighing in at like 58lbs. Which would raise it a tad higher.

Alright, got the trunk as ready as its gonna get. Can't afford any dampener or anything… :(

Although I feel this is gonna rattle like a sumbitch. As it did in the other, poor design of the 10"s I felt I had a lot of cancellation the way they were faced. All 4 up firing now…. Trunk rattle? Oh well..

Now, Lets get to the design! - Hit up Lowes got 3/4" MDF. It took up too much room in the shop so I cut it up same day to the lengths I needed, had quite a bit left over. But that Double Baffle really took up a lot of extra MDF.

Took a lot out of me to do all that, so taking a needed nights rest. Will be back tomorrow.

Day 2:

Alright, fresh start today, lets see what we can accomplish.

Started gluing the bottom piece and sides in. But forgot to take progress pictures..

Clamped that bishhh together tight with all the clamps I had. Used about 8 clamps. I put a few nails in each with the staple gun, didnt need much since i glued and clamped it tight as hell nothing is getting out of there. Its SEALED. Also will be putting liquid nail in there when done.

Also threw that stabilizer board in there just to hold them at a perfect 90 when drying.

Had a few things to do, so I left it there and came bout a few hours later. Took the clamps off then remembered to take some pics D:

The stabilizer board wasn't glued in or nailed in or anything, just sitting there, so took it out , no longer needed. ( that stabilizer board is a side piece, so it fit perfectly )

Took a break to come write up the progress for today, got a little late, ill go at it again tomorrow. Slow steps..eh.

Day 3:

Got out there early and did some gluing, clamping and nailing for the side pieces. Not very interesting, but heres some pics because :ttiwwop:

EDIT: Didn't get to show you all the bracing I will be using. So heres a quick Sketchup pic of it.

18078220.png

3" x 3" block in the direct center should be good. Subs are only 18lbs and the 3" x 3" x 10.5" takes up .05cf which brings the box out to exactly 3.5cf which is right where I wanted it. I dont think its too much bracing. But can you ever have TOO MUCH bracing?

( Couldn't post this 1 last picture in the last one - Hit my limit )

ShowImage-1.jpg

Had an estimate of 6400 for an alpine/clarion setup dealer said it "should" hit around 160db with the custom boxes he was going to make for me..doubtful with so much area to move but, budget is way below that :( any ideas on cheaper brands for that kind of Spl setup? really didnt want to try any Boss or soundstorm, thinking Quantum figure around $150 per speaker "$1800 total" and $1700 to power it, first actual big setup for the van.

New MEMPHIS CAR AUDIO build

4 15s Memphis C3

2 xs power D3100

1 xs power d3400

They slam pretty good in my little civic. Only 400rms a piece. but x4 isn't too bad. In the other box, I had 2 facing trunk rear, and two facing cabin, so I think i had quite a bit of cancellation, but with all 4 up firing I think I will be able to notice a bit difference in DBs. But I don't have a termlab I can get this build metered, but I dont have the other box to get it measured, but I am almost positive it will be slightly more SPL! I got a few more things to do like seal the edges with Liquid Nail and sand some - then I might carpet it.

but hopefully I wil have vids in the next few days. Shouldn't be more than 2 before I got most of it together.

I seen a few of the 15" Memphis subs around town. They sound gooood. I will check out your build log. Maybe steal some ideas. But I pretty much got this build planned out.

Cept I saw a good idea for the speaker wire mentioned somewhere else, predrill a hole, then drill a threaded rod through it, so its sealed tight, and ring terminal speaker wire to each side. Better than drilling a 1/4" hole in a sealed box to run speaker wire though. So I will check into it.

But vids will come soon, also working on the interior of my car.. So its a bit torn apart right now.

But,

Thanks man! Stay tuned!

Oh yeah, just thought of something.

What do you guys think about roundover bits, for rounding over the speaker holes? I think it would look pretty clean for this box build.

But what do you guys think?

Bumpp for some more views/comments.

Cant work on the actual box today, but I might be able to get out there and do some work in the trunk. I have a few things to do like make the false floor, make a battery rack, make an amp rack, and a few other things.

Should get some more work done and posted by tomorrow, but what do you guys think of how its coming along? && The previous post, rounding over the sub holes?
