average life span of a keyboard

Recommended Posts

Mechanical keyswitches last for about 50 million presses (per keyswitch). At least that's what Cherry claims on their MX keyswitches

Membrane keyboards not quite as long (only number that I've found so far was about 15 million keystrokes per key).

Exact timeframe in years depends on usage, maintenance, quality, etc. I've had my Razer Lycosa for about 3 years and I have some issues with keys not responding occasionally (moreso since I switched to Windows 8). I just want to upgrade from a membrane (Lycosa) to a mechanical (BlackWidow)

Heck I've heard of some oldschool keyboards still going strong after about 20-30 years

Edit: Here's some Cherry MX switches that I have lying around (added O-rings to quiet down the loud "bottoming out" noise when pushed down all the way). Ordered the keyswitch sampler from Max Keyboard.

Blue: Tactile, loud click when bump is felt

Brown: Tactile, no click when bump is felt

Red: Linear, no tactile bump/click

Black: Same as red, but spring is a little stiffer.

I agree.. I do prefer a good snap or click or w.e membrane ones feel mushy less exact I guess but then again I don't really buy the whole gaming keyboard being more precise aka better k/d ratio results kinda thing vs a 20 year old IBM ps2 keyboard I have..

I'm planning on getting something like the Corsair K90 or K95, whenever the latter comes out. K95 is full mechanical (and black base), while the K90 is mostly mechanical (macro, F-keys, and the PageUp/PageDown cluster are membrane, plus silver base).

I'm interested in trying a mechanical anyway, but not anything with Cherry MX Blues (too clicky). I doubt my gameplay will improve, but I'm just bored with membrane keyboards.

Either the aforementioned Corsair or something else, like Ducky. Backlit preferred :P

I didn't even know keyboards had a lifespan. I've always thought they were eternal lol
