SQ RANT.........

Recommended Posts

My head hurts when I read some of the posts in the SQ section on SMD. I am SPL/dB Dragger at heart but, I am old school. Based on era where the cleaniest systems had 1/2 din eq's and active crossovers and all speakers were ala carte. Today with Passive crossover components and DSP's, they have produced some of the best sounding vehicles ever. However, if you are going to put a door full of loud speakers and bullet tweeters, please out of respect, keep the acronyms "SQ" out of your mouth and thread. A 360.3 is a fantastic piece of equipment but, damnit there is only so much it can do.

"YOU CAN'T POLISH A TURD....."

Anyone who has built a true SQ system understands the term less is more and someone from an SPL background it is one hard concept to grasp. Especially when we've spent thousands of dollars worrying about 10% of the full sound spectrum. In that logic to cover the remaining 90% would take more speakers than ever. Seriously, start on a budget, ask questions and read before making a decsision in which direction you want to go in. SPL and SQ are not for everyone but have respect for those who do it and stick to "a clean system for your ride"

it is not that people are reaching true sound quality, but they are retaining a bit of it. I don't understand why the acronym SQ bothers people, it is not like people are talking about true true SQ. They are just stating that with however many speakers or subwoofers they have, they are retaining a good sound, or some SQ.

Then again, my point my be skewed since I have only been in the car audio game for about 5 years.

Don't forget it is just a rant..........my .02 thats all.

I know there are some people out there who understand where I am coming from and some who are like "Who Cares????"

WELL I CARE DAMNIT!!!!!

It would be like telling an SPL guy there is no difference between doing 140, 150 and 160.

OR

Mayonaisse and Miracle Whip taste the same.

I built my system after Harry kimura's Acura and Eric Stevens sable. Rear mounted midbass idea came from the Grand National. The winningest SQ car in history. Does my car sound like these. Not even close yet. But it sounds better every year. If I replaced my amps and got someone to tune it I think I could do well in some competitions. I don't consider my car a true sq car at all but it will play everything from tech9 to Vivaldi and doesn't skip a beat. It has great dynamics. I think what people really want is tonality. I don't see imaging and stage depth being possible with 20 speakers in your door and that's fine. Were comparing apples and oranges here.

APPLES = SQ

ORANGES = SPL

FRUIT = EVERYONE ELSE IN CAR AUDIO

It is the Fruit that are trying to say I am both Apple and Orange this rant is directed at. Granted majoirty of these fruit have not ripened and have potential to become either an apple or orange.

I consider myself an over ripened orange inside of a sour apple.

Lol I agree with you. Sorry if my post sounded different. Wasn't meant to. I would like to have an apple car and an orange car personally. That way you have no compromises. :)

I think people get confused when they think of an sq car they think french cafe music, vocal quartets, and 60 yr. old jazz recordings. Like that's all an sq system can play. It don't work like that hahaa. I have heard some loud sq cars too. It might not have been over 145 but with those dynamics and transients you could be forgiven for thinking so.

Might need to add vegetables to that list as well - those who break their windows out with some kenwood 15's.

The only thing I sort of have a grasp on in SQ is time alignment and staging. That is just the tip of the iceberg I assume.
