64 impala 454 in the front end new system in the rear end jl, jbl, pioneer

Recommended Posts

So to start off me and my dad have been working on this for a while, I've installed 2 systems in the impala and now it's happening agean. I think we have had this car for around 20 years so it's always cool to get to come back to one of the first systems I ever installed and see how far and how much I've learned. So here we go.
Equipment
Pioneer deck by, iPod ext in glove box
Jl g1700 mono block
Old school jbl ( from the first install)
Estate audio RCA ( what became diamond audio also from the first install)
Pioneer 3 ways in the kick panels
2x jl audio 10w0 vintage
SHCA shrink wrapped terminals and fuse holder
2ga welding cable w stinger battery isolator
Optima red top battery
There's more I'm sure a lot of the audio stuff is stuff that we have had from past installs.
So here's where I started this was the second install I ever did when back in the late 90's. It's a bit rough but it's lasted 15years so it needs to be updated.

Started with the mock up to find placement. I have added a second optima red top to power the system.

The trim panel holding the battery in is a old one. I'll be remaking it with a new viewing window. So on with the pictures.
So I'll start at the front 2ga power wire running back to the rear and the second battery. Allot of the wires are I place and I'm cleaning up some of the wiring in the car in general. The big three is started.

I ran the main power under the body along the body seams it runs a bit close to the exhaust so,I wrapped it with some heat shield and a firewall grommet.

The beginnings of a fiberglass box with the amps in the center.

Built the amp rack and pre wired it. All the wires will be Tek flexed and heat shrunk.the amp rack comes out in one piece.

Let the fiberglassing begin.

Both sides 7 layers each .note the quick disconnect plug. I want the amp rack to drop out with as little effort as possible.

Sorry the pics skip a bit I'm working by my self and some times get in the zone and forget to shoot build pics. Ill snap some more as I get farther in to this.
Fiberglass done tops put on. This is where I managed to shoot my self in the foot. Then I put the tops on the boxes I fiberglassed the out side which made them fit way too snug. dUH. Lesson learned Aldo worth a mention that while sanding one of these to get the top level it fell off the saw horse and broke my toe. Oh well it happens learned a lesson about how not to place something on a saw horse.

The issue here was that the box tops where not level to the trunk. This would have made the trim panels not line up correctly so I had to fix that. Lots of sanding and expanding foam fixed that.

That's all for now.

  • 6 months later...

So some updates in the system. Got rid of the jbl amp in favor of an old school autotek street machine 4 Chanel. Looks better and sounds great. With this change comes a re arrange in where things go.

There was a plexiglass cover but that was broken awhile back. So it's time to scrap all of it and rebuild it. So over the next few weeks I will be getting this together.
