C-pillar wall thoughts.

Recommended Posts

OK, fellas. I posted this topic on another forum with zero replies but I know this is the place that people go big and I've seen a few threads here were guys actually did a lot of testing and such so I'm hoping for some advice and ideas here. I spent many hours last night using the search function and still have some questions.

97 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I've been entirely limited by box volume and geometry. Pretty much stuck within a couple few tenths of 150 (can get more with dedicated fartbox tuned high). I want to play normal music (not slowed stuff or whale songs) and I do a LOT of driving.

I can do about the same number with a 5 cube box that allows plenty of room for the port to function unimpeded and allows me to rotate it a bit (my best numbers are with sub up and port firing into the passenger side corner), or about 10 cube with either subs or port crowded into the sides of the cargo area and without the ability to move it to chase 10ths when I go to shows. Single 15, single 18, pair of 18's, pair of 15's, two to four 12's, four 10's, all within less than a 1dB spread. The main difference being that more coils = better long term thermal handling, and too much cone area tends to make low extension and musicality suffer.

I also need a rather heavy investment of space for amp and batteries which has been a logistics issue as well.

So, I'm wanting to hear from people with C-pillar walls or who have seen them. Particularly in comparison to just keeping everything less permanent in the cargo area. What gains can be expected over just working with something less permanent in the cargo area? The build I liked the looks of most on here, it seemed the guy didn't do great numbers and b-pillar walled shortly after which I thought was not so encouraging.

I figure after amp, batteries, wood, subs, bracing, and port I can come up with 15 cube and keep my back seats, so I'm thinking 3 15's, 4 12's (possibly 4 10's since I have them built). Definitely not 2 18's since ideally I'll have at least 3 coils so I can go balls-out without burning coils too often.

In truth, it's plenty loud enough to make me smile every time I drive but I always get the itch this time of year and very much enjoy rebuilding things.

So, go for it, or not worth the trouble?

I'm tuned in, but have nothing to offer other than congratulations on a well written first post and the fact that you actually did your research before you started asking questions.

We always love to see some new builds though :)

I liked my c-pillar wall. Had I built it in the truck I could have gotten a lot more room out of it. But I did rebuild at the b-pillar to get more airspace for subs a couple years later.

From your list of equipment options I would say walling would only be worth it if you did 3 15s. Don't waste your time walking 4 12s or 10s IMO. How much power do you have? Or plan on having?

Options for power I have here are JBL/Crown a6000GTi or 8X Zed Minotaur. Currently running the Crown, which I would really like to have in a build to show it off once before I switch out to the Minotaurs.

I have 5 Shocker Neo sigs to use (though I have about 7 ceramics as well, but I'm leaning towards neo for the weight savings over the 70 pound small-gaps). 4 are built up 10" right now, the other 12". In my testing 10" is louder than 12" up until about 3.25 cube, and 12's go really nice in 4 cube each so 5 10's or 4 12's is about right for the airspace I can get. The difference between 3 12's and 2 12's in 8 cube box is only 1 or 2 tenths!

I've done a half-wall in the past and it was very poor in the jeep with ports and subs firing forward, and simply rotating the box 90 degrees firing to the side picked up almost 2dB! I guess my largest fear is that any gains to be had from cone area and VB will be removed by not being able to load ports/subs into a wall of the cargo area.

Am I the only one who gets obsessed with this shit once the warm weather starts coming?

Are you going to put your batteries under the vehicle if you go C-Pillar? I don't see you having much room for them and amps and box if you go full C-Pillar.

Things I like about mine- If I roll it, the box protects me. lol. Mine won't be setting any records, and I'm sure my old subs and weak amps don't help, but crazy loud on the meter it is not. However, I can do demos all day then get on the meter and Street Beat the same number if I had just gone up to the meter cold. I don't know if that is because of my setup or if it is more consistent like that because it is C-Pillar. ...maybe having that much air to excite tends to even things out- consistency wise. So, it is very predictable. That means I can listen to it the way I want for hours on end- which is what I was after, sounds like what you are after. Also, people seem to love walls, especially C-Pillars. As far as space, I can comfortably fit 5 people and luggage, which is nice. -When I just had a box back there, all of the space above the box was "wasted" so it is actually the same difference.

Problem? Weight. Mine is heavy and it is all over the back axle or behind it. She drives like a tongue heavy moose.

Batteries and sub amps will have to be on the very back of the wall either way, and yeah they eat up a lot of volume any way you slice it. The Crown is about 7" tall and the narrow side of the batteries is 7" as well so I figure line up the batteries along the bottom with the amp mounted above won't take any more space either way. I do not have access to any welding equipment so mounting batteries outside is out.

As it sits there's a false floor in the back of my Jeep that covers amp(s) and batteries so depending which subs I'm using at the moment it's somewhat easy to remove for nearly full cargo space if needed.

I was ordering some recone parts the other day and got talked into just doing a regular wall. I was told by a reliable source how I could essentially make a removeable box and flush it in all around with the capability to have everything removeable. Not easily removeable, but enough so that when I need stuff out once a year for a big road trip I can have a normal vehicle.

Really after sitting outside with a tape measure and pen and paper there's just no way I can get enough volume to make it worth the trouble and keep the back seats.

So, tentative plan is to rebuild the 4 neo motors up to 15" and run 4 of those in about 20 cube on the Crown amp. After showing that off at a few shows I'll swap that out for the Zed amps.

Thanks for the reply!
