Air Shocks to compensate for added weight of system?

Recommended Posts

Looking to replace the rear shocks in the firebird and curious who if anyone uses air shocks?

With the added weight of the stereo is it a good idea to change the shocks to air or something else ot just keep it OEM? For that matter should teh springs be replaced? Figure the car will gain at least 350 pound in the back.

TIA

I have used air shocks, yes shock not bags, in 3 different vehicles, some loaded heavily and I have never had a problem yet. I have also used 2 different types of air bags on 2 different vehicles. On my current Tahoe I got air bags and air shocks and again no problem.

I would buy air shocks again if I had to FYI

the car is a 98, so I would think with 100K on the odometer and being 16 years old the rears are gone.

Being a firebird (3.8 V6) is has "sport" deCarbon shocks and separate springs.

So you guys are saying go ahead and swap with something like this:

how bout the springs? And to add another twist..... I may be putting a set of 19"s on it, will that add to the equation?

I really can't answer all that, lol. Basically if I was you, I would put the shocks on, put the stereo in, then wee what your clearance/squat is like and see if you can fit the 19". Might not be able to have the best of both worlds. I really don't know though. The air shocks I have always used have seemed to impress me. I usually buy Monroe and because of vehicles they have always been different kits than the one you posted BUT it looks very similar.

I have had them on a 1992 Chevy S10, a 1997 Chevy Silverado, and now my 2007 Tahoe. In my Tahoe I have almost 750 lbs just in batteries and these shocks raise it up. in my Silverado the leaf springs seamed to have lost some of their spring, I put the air shocks on and I could load my 800 lb (by itself) ATV in the back and it would sit level with 2 people in cab, gas cans etc.etc.

I just don't want to tell you it would work and have it not work out for you. =/

I have air shocks in my blazer. They have about 40 lbs. usually to keep it level. 90 lbs. lifts it about 2 inches so I can pull my trailer. Work just fine for me.

Several systems, several vehicles. Always changing!
