wtf is wrong with my 2x12" trunkbuild (sql)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Im new member at this forum but have read a lot here before i desided to sign up.

im a total caraudio freak living in sweden and have done a few not so serious builds before this one.

Im having problem with the output or spl with my latest system in a volvo s60 sedan.

Running 2 spl dynamics spl300d1a (comparable to sq/aq hdc3) in a sealed of frontfired box

Amp: gz plutonium 4K wired at 1ohm.

Batts: 2x95ah agm

hu: pioneer 80prs with 5v outputs

Boxvolume with port and subs in is about 125liters or 4,4ft3 tuned to 39hz tried 36 before but then my peak was att 28-30hz

Portarea is 408cm2 or 63in2.

Have done some testing with my dbm2 meter that i know dont measure like TL.

With tonegenerator, my peak is at 33,7hz and i can play 134db on music at 32-35hz with 90% vol on the hu and 70%gain on the amp.

thats the problem, i was aiming at like 145+ at music...and i dont want to gain it all up because i wanna give the subs clean signal.

Im thinking that with 5volt outputs on my hu i shouldnt have to turn up the gain more than i have.

I dont have any scope or dd-1 meter to measure clean signal either.

Is the problem boxraise because the subs aint movin much either?

Ive seen many builds here doing pretty good numbers on similar setups, its kind of rare in sweden to build trunkbuilds to play high with so you guys must have some ideas??

Unless it is a termlab you're getting pointlessly frustrated.

5v preouts and gain @70% doesn't add up.

Sorry i dont get what you mean, do you also think my gain is "to high" when i have nearly 5volts out (full vol) from hu?

Ive measured my previous setup and car to 142,2db at 37hz with that dbm2 and 137db on TL with same song so i think those 134 i get now at 32hz also is much lower on TL.

In that case the frustration would be even higer;)

Pictures?

Trunks eat DBeez so without getting creative it's difficult to get loud in the cabin. Have you tried to measure SPL in the trunk?

Yeah i know, try to figure out how to post pictures and videos haha.

The point of the gain is to match the input signal from the h.u.

Most amps are labeled like

6v to .2v

So if you have 5v inputs, your gain should be closer to minimum then maximum is all he was saying

It's all very rough speak obviously there's plenty of settings that could influence setting your gain properly so you'll have to make sure everything is properly set.

But again roughly with 2 12s on a 4k amp you should be wellll into the 40s easilly.

As someone else noted. If your not using a term lab or at least an spl labs meter then your results reallllly may be crap.

So until you get your hands on a meter you can trust, sit back and listen to your music. You should be concerned with whether or not you like how it sounds as oppossed to what number it's doing.

Setup:

2010 Hyundai Elantra

Factory Unit via 4 chan NVX LOC

Excessive Amperage "H/O" Alt

Xs D3400/ Xs XP3000

Big 3. 2 Runs of +, 2 Runs of -

DD M3b and 2 12" AQ HDC4s
