Think I Broke Something (Ford POSI Rear End)

Already emailed my mechanic, but lets get some feed back here. Please don't spam up this thread with assumptions unless you know a little something about the topic. Thanks.

Symptoms:

-Lately, ive noticed that the whine from the rear has become louder. Its easy to hear with on seats or deadener in that area. Well, today it was really loud. Start to hear it at 40mph and it gets louder. At 80-85mph it is crazy/obnoxiously loud.

-The sound can be manipulated by throttle position (changing the load on the rear gears), and it almost disappears when the clutch is depressed at speed.

-Also, the noise gets worse in a left turn and almost disappears in a right turn. Im talking about long lazy curves at speed on the freeway.

-These cars are known for clunking noises from the rear suspension, but the occurrence of these sounds has increased.

-This is a weird one. This morning when I left my parking spot, I released the ebrake and depressed the clutch and the car didn't move. It usually begins to roll out on its own. Let out the clutch a little and there was a clunk and the car started to roll. Felt like a sticky e- brake,

but I believe it was the POSI somehow stuck.

This rear end has spider gears and carbon-fiber clutches. I think one or both of those is failing on one side. Maybe the springs are going bad causing the clutch system to function incorrectly? Any opinions?

Sounds like a pinion gear issue.. May be a loose pinion nut and or pinion bearing or gears.

Pinion noise comes on loads and will go away when not on acceleration

Edit: sorry didnt read the last part. You may have a second issue with the posi track. Unless the Pinion gear is that loose its binding up. Bearing can bind up as well

tuned in for results. The 9.75 in my dad's 03 SuperCrew is LSD unit, also has a VERY noticeable whine anywhere above 35mph.

Whats your take on my third bullet point, the increase in noise turning left, and no noise at all turning right.

Pinion gear/bearing sounds like a good place to start.

Edit: when turning it loads the side and can cause a noise.

I'm still leaning towards the pinion gear, and the different loads that are seen. The way everything turns in there, it could load different in different turns.

Difference in long corners would show a different speed (rate of rotation) between the rear wheels.

I'm going with the posi being the issue.

Would explain difference in toruqe load, but not the "parked lock up". Unless the care was not straight parked.

Edit- the pinion and ring gear back lash would explain a lot of the issues, the corner thingy is odd.

Axle bearings can cause that, recently on my fathers explorer the axle bearing was making noise and finally let loose and broke while driving. Now is it a constant noise or is it one that appears when the wheel is in the proccess of making a revolution and makes the noise in a certain spot while the wheel is making that revolution, if you get what I mean?

A bad bearing could cause the turn difference, too, by not allowing the axle to spin freely, and preventing the posi from functioning right.

That stuck thing was weird, bro. Thats the real head scratcher. But thena again, a bad bearing could kind of stick until forced to move.
