TheLeeStrikes
So i just bought a brand new HDS312 about 2 weeks ago and been running it of a hifonics GLX1400.d so i turn up the volume at full tilt after like couple of hard hitting songs and mean hard hitting songs like BME click, and after a while a funny smell starts coming out of the box I'm not sure if its burn voice coil or just extra glue, i had a power acoustic on the same amp and that thing would smell bad and i could tell is was the VC because it smelled like burn plastic but this smell on this Sub is way different it kinda has a sweet smell and the sub does get warm but not hot which i think its normal for a sub to get a bit warm from the dust cap like i said it doesn't get hot, i have stock alt and battery but i did the big 3 with 0 gauge and voltage does not drop below 13 volts, sometimes i will drop to like 12.8 volts but only on some specific songs. i don't really turn the sub on a lot maybe 10 minutes per day maybe even less and i just bought it couple of weeks ago. There are various threads on here that argue against doing that, and the only way to set gains efficiently is either an oscilloscope or dd-1. Personally I've never set someone's gains on their amp and it be around 3/4 of the way up. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've never done it. 2007 Ford F-150 Reg. Cab. Kranny
turn the gain to like 5/8 and see if it still gets hot. probably wont. if you want to be safe, DMM that amp to 1000w. so around 31v. probably wont smell after that. if you did 1400w for the dmm, then you're clipping. because hifonics amps dont do rated. i also hope you did like a 0db or -5db test tone while setting the gains. this part is very important. Dracanse1178
i find that my soundqubed coils smelt like cat piss when they burnt off the resin http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/189087-is-fiberglassing-inside-the-box-worth-it-for-strength/?p=2821887
csshakka
My hds312 is running off a sundown saz-1200d tuned with a -7.5 db test tone and DD1. Haven't noticed a burning smell. Like others said, you're probably clipping. Another thing to note is what volume your head unit clips at. If it clips at 45/60 and you're playing it at 55/60, regardless of your gain, you're going to be clipping.
