04 explorer needs some love!

Recommended Posts

Sup guys wondering if anyone has some more mechanical experience with this vehicle. Mine is the eddie bauer edition with the 4.6 v8

Is ready to roll 101000 miles so I think is time to do a full sweep of maintenance on this thing.

I'm thinking brakes. More than likely green stuff pads. Maybe rotors depending how much meat is left.

I also want to replace all the fluids. Brakes, tranny, radiator, engine, and blinker fluid.

Is there any other thing I should be looking for? Also what brands should I look for when buying the fluids

Yeah I know there are a few Ford guys on here especially with the explorer.

I gotta see if I have the manual. That would be nice to check lol

Fluid brand shouldn't really matter, but I use all Motorcraft (oem) fluids on mine.

Check the spark plugs!!!

Change the fuel filter!!!

Even if you have no CEL, run a diagnostic. Sometimes codes will pop without triggering the warning light.

Its 10 years old, go through and check all radiator and heater hoses, fuel lines, vacuum lines, and brake lines for any cracks or deterioration.

Fuck Ford LOL.

Be careful when removing the spark plugs. They like to break. It's not as bad on the 2 valve motors like yours, but it's a good idea to start it up and let it get kinda warm first. Can't remember, but I think it only uses 2 coil packs, they need replaced aswell.

Coolant needs to be flushed and replaced. This is REALLY important. Thermostat, waterpump, that simple stuff needs to be done at 100k.

Servicing the trans is kind of a bitch. But it needs to be done, definitely at 100k, fluid drain and a filter replacement.

That'll help you out on the tranny service. It's a good idea for the fluid to be warm for that too, just a little light driving, around the block once, back up the driveway once or twice. Ford recommends a full flush, but that's a bad idea in my opinion. You'll drain like 5-6 quarts out when you service it, the rest is all up in the torque converter. 5k miles or so down the road, drain the fluid and put the same amount in. The trans hold like 12.5 quarts or so.

Brakes should definitely be addressed. A full fluid flush, pads, maybe rotors, worst case some new lines if the brakes feel squishy after the rest.

Differential fluid can be replaced now also. Not really neccessary until 150k, but if you have it down for a weekend or so, you might as well do it.

That's all I can think of right now. Some more stuff will come to me later in the day, I'll post up here.

PCV valve. takes 5 minutes

edit: double check but I think 100,000 calls for a new belt too. For sure at least inspect it. I had a split in it at 100k

I don't fuck around. I go from zero to I hope you die in less than 2 posts
