Need to know if amp is adequate for subs.

Recommended Posts

Currently I am running two setups. I have a setup I run for NSPL and one for music and cruising around. My question is, hopefully without sounding idiotic, about my music setup. I am running two red top batteries. Pioneer 9000 series single din head unit. The current amp and sub setup is a Digital Design M1a (older) with two ARC audio black series subs in ported box. This is a setup with a one ohm load. The subs do well; however I do have to back the gain off quite a bit. They get warm after a little while of playing. According to the specs online the amp is putting out around 1000 watts at 12v. So I know it's doing more than that right now. My system stays just a tad under 14v

I have two Alpine type X twelves (1000 watts rms a piece) in a custom ported box (38 hz). I'm pretty sure that the amp will be under powering them, not allowing them to reach their full potential. My question is though, for music, will this amp be sufficient enough to push the twelves without under powering them to the point of damage?

not possible to damage a speaker by under powering it alone.

this, and what the guy said above me.

fuck the plating. look at what the main metal used is. you could buy unicorn blood plated terminals but if its just covering up dog shit, whats the point

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

I didn't think so. Just making sure. Right now the gain is about 1/3 of the way up. The ARCs get warm after about 10 minutes of good play. One even popped a bit the other night. PAC knob was up, sub xover at 63, and amp 1/3 way. I wanted to use this for the beginner class at the NSPL, however my other setup was 2db higher. The amp has a good quality circuit board and doesn't seem to have a problem keeping up. more, or less, just wanted to make sure it would handle the Xs together. Thanks guys for the input.

The X's will handle it no problem. What they can't handle, and same for any speaker, or driver. They can't handle clipping. I don't care where your gain is on the fraction meter or clock meter. You need to set it properly with a DD-1 or a O-Scope to match the output voltage of your headunit to the input voltage of your amplifier.
