I would like to get some practice maintaining a certain DB before doing this, and also would just like to know how well i'm doing lol. Is there any way to maybe build my own meter, hooked to a laptop? I have yet to compete, this will be my first time... but I see they always have an LCD or a laptop displaying the score at shows. Is this just a calibrated mic hooked to a PC or Mac? If so, where do I find one? If I can't do it this way, what are the lowest priced meters on the market that are accurate? Not looking to break the bank on this, just want to know where I stand before the day comes.... Any help/ suggestions are welcome, thanks! You could build it yourself if you have enough time and knowledge on electronics and a bit of physics knowledge. Thinking is the root of all problems... You ALWAYS get what you pay for. I have scoured eBay, Amazon, only to find cheap, unaccurate meters that top out at like 120DB. I am getting around 140db now and will soon be doubling power/cone area, so a 150Db max would be great! Termlab is also going to have more advanced competition formats that you can use for practice for upcoming shows, where as a SPL labs is just going to give you a number. The making of it isn't hard, but designing the software and getting it to read close or dead on to either of these 2 meters is where its going to be a challenge, and without one of them to copy its design from and to test your meter against your just pissing in the wind. The only drag to me is the time., or speed of it. that said, its a GREAT tool, IMHO for seeing SPL, or timed runs. And, its with out a doubt cheaper.
