AstoSoup
Putting together a new temporary enclosure for my Powerbass 3XL 15. I am using a single 15 enclosure that was custom built by a well known local builder, 4.3 cu. ft. gross volume, 1" MDF, currently tuned to 46Hz with a 4" aero port. I believe the guy had a little Kicker 15 or something in it, nothing big at all so one 4" aero was fine. I however, want to modify the box to better suit my 3XL for the time being, until such a time I can afford a second sub and build a nice box. What would be a good port size/quantity for my sub? I would like my optimal output to be between 30-33Hz, so I figure I will tune at 31-32Hz. I used a port size calculator, entered the Xmax and desired tuning and it recommends a minimum diameter of 7.51" and minimum port area of 44.26". My old box was the same size, same tuning, different dimensions and with two 4" ports it suffered on lows but had great output at 38+Hz. I tried an 8" port and it sounded like wind blowing and was a big loss to the ear-o-meter. So if anyone has any ideas as to how many of what size ports would be optimal in this situation, I would appreciate it! Here are the specs for my sub... http://www.powerbassusa.com/sites/powerbassusa.com/files/3XL_Woofer_Manual%20v2.pdf Thanks! Triticum Agricolam
A 7" port would probably be ideal, but its probably going to be hard to find something that diameter. A pair of 5" ports would be good to, but they wouldn't be any easier to find than a 7". You could do three or four 4" ports. I know that much money for a port hurts peoples feelings including mine, but loud, quality and performance should be priority I plan on going with Psychoports once I do my permanent enclosure for two subs but for now, just want to try and get the most I can out of the one sub and this box. I presume the port/ports in the new box will need to be different than this one, so it would essentially be a waste of money just to use for a few months. Yeah one 6" would definitely be better than two 4", its more port area and larger ports handle higher port velocities better, so its an improvement all the way around. Its still less port area than what I'd consider ideal, but its a step in the right direction. Could have been the box size in relation to port size but when I put that in, I lost some output compared to the two 4". I would have stayed with the 4"s but my lows were chuffing, even with flares on the ends. Really do not care too much about higher bass, just trying get frequencies 30-35Hz, in that area. RainStryke
Looks like you just need to do something like this: 6 inch PVC 13" long would get you right around 32Hz Source: http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp
