Help with DD1

I need some help with DD1 and I am a little bit confused on what is going on. So recently I upgraded from a 500 to a 1000 watt amp and a new sub. With my past amp I was using track 7 which is 40hz -15db and it sounded great, on my new amp I am using track 5, 40hz -10 db but it sounds weaker than my 500 and i tried track 7 on new amp and with my MM I was reading 50Vac at speaker wires while the ohms law says that at 2 ohms 1000 it should be 44vac or so. So i lowered it to 42vac and I took a quick drive and it was louder but real quick I started smelling wire or coil heating up.

What am I doing wrong, or what can I do because when I set it to track 5 the gain is half way and at track 7 it is 3/4 of the way and for me that seems like it was too high for barely picking up any distortion.

your using a track that is 5db quieter than the other amp, so chances are the new amp with a track that is 5db quieter is washing out the fact that its a stronger amplifier.

use track 7 -15db with the new amp, and it will be louder than the old amp.

However if your putting more power to the woofers and they cant take that additional power, your just going to make them hot and blow them due to the added power that they cant take (especially if the enclosure is not optimal for the woofers).

Not to thread jack, but at what db do you recommend tuning mids/highs and subs..?

It really depends on the gear being used.

there is no ideal best for all..

You can use track 7 -15db on a dc level 6 with a dc 5.0k powering it and could be just fine, while you take a power acousik bamf woofer with a sony 1000watt amp and use that same track 7 -15db and blow it in 5 minutes.

LOL ... well my equipment is 1 Fi SP4 15 and a RF T2500... would I be fine with track 7? and I think I'll tune my mid/highs in between 0 and -5 to be safe

I just want to clarify that there is a difference between dB(u) and dB(SPL).

dB(u), in this instance, is the unit used to measure the signal level, albeit analog or digital. This unit is the one used in equalizers, and in the DD-1 test tone tracks.

dB(SPL) is physical volume level that one competes for in the lanes.

For a fair comparison between the 500w and 1000w amps, the same signal level (dB(u)) test tone should be used to calibrate sensitivity (gain) levels. If you are overpowering your speaker from the boot, i would advise against using the minus dB(u) signals for setting your gains.

Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.

Old System: 500 watt amp, 600 watt sub, track 7

New System: 1000 watt amp, 1000 watt sub, track 7

The setting on my headunit are the same as with the old one, no bass boost added, but the new system seems to either heat up faster or clip, I am not sure what is happening, but the problem is that I set the gain a bit below distortion to avoid problem.

With the old system, same settings the same track I used before everything worked great no clipping or smell.

I am confused on what can be going on, and also when I turn up the gain and it gets close to distortion my dd1 low battery lights turn on, when I lower the gain, the low battery goes away. Any suggestions will help, I am just disappointed that I am not bumping 1000, sounds more like 300.

bigger amp on the same speaker will of course make it heat up faster. what is the power rating of your speaker?

EDIT: I see the rating after re-reading your post. I say trust your ears, set the gains using the DD-1 with the 0dB tone, and just listen. The smell could be the breaking-in of the new woofer. Different speakers have different properties, so what you considered loud in the old speaker could be different with the new speaker. Also, make sue your crossovers and infra-sonic filters are set correctly.

Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.

That was one of my thoughts, but what if it wasnt breaking in and it was burning up. What I will have to do is to keep my seat up because it might be causing rattling which from the front seat it sounds like clipping.

Well my amp has Filter freq which I guess you can call crossover set at 125.

I got a JL Audio JX1000/1D and a Alpine Type R 10, maybe there is something common that I might not know, I believe my 300 watt sub also smelled but it never burnt a coil and then it went away after it was broken in.
