Line Drivers, Are they Necessary?

Hello! Got another noob question...

I was told that if I installed a line driver in between my radio and my sub amplifier that I would be able to turn down the gain on my amplifier, causing it to work "less as hard" while still playing just as loud. I guess what my installer buddy was trying to say was somehow the extra voltage causes the amplifier to run more efficiently somehow? This is supposed to score you more power in the long run and thus more sound. If someone could explain, that would be great! It just seems too good to be true, I mean, then a line drive would almost need to be a necessity!

Oh, I'm running an Alpine CDE-HD149BT, which is supposed to have 4v RCA outputs.

Thanks!

I'm not sure why you would need one with 4v outs. What amp are you running, what subs, what final ohm load? Why type of enclosure? What platform are you going for? Example, are you just doing a daily driver, a demo machine, competition, etc.

I'm using a line driver because I'm using several amps, and I'm running a tablet as my source unit which doesn't have a very powerful output. The line driver will add signal volts and give me a stronger signal.

I'm sure someone will be able to give a better answer than me, but seems to me if you set your head unit and amp to the highest non clipped setting (set with a DD1 for example) then you're going to get the best signal no matter if line driver or not. But like I said, I think maybe someone will have a better answer.

You only need a line driver if your source isn't putting out the voltage required to drive your amp. Gain setting is irrelevant in the way you describe it. It's the ratio between input and output voltage. Higher input voltage necessitates a lower ratio (gain setting) and vice versa. Power is power, independent of this ratio.

Thanks for the responses!

I was thinking along the same line as your guys' responses. Oh, and this is just a daily driver, just one 1200w Pioneer amp with an SA-15, nothing too fancy. I just couldn't wrap my mind around how he was seemingly finding more power in my system, just by adding a line driver. He did work in a shop, so maybe this was something he was taught to say to increase sales :/. Thanks for all the input, and I'm open for more information if anyone's got it!
