Cheap or homemade adjustable power supply?

Recommended Posts

I just need something to supply constant 5v DC to a throttle position sensor to check if its working. I'd rather not spend a few hundred on a power supply for something I'll probably use once. I'm sure there are some cheap ass units out there or some of you guys here might even know how to make something that can regulate the voltage off a 12v battery.

Alkaline batteries are 1.6v when fresh out of the box. 3 in series will give you 4.8v. Would that be close enough for your test?

this is VERY EASY....

you will need a few things:

1) a 36vdc power supply with adjustable voltage...

2) a digital buck converter

links to each

2) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Buck-DC-DC-Digital-Control-Step-down-Converter-Power-Supply-Module-6-40V-6A-240W-/231577143862?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35eb12ca36

simply wire them up, and using the digital control you can set your constant voltage or current depending on your project...

all for about 100 bucks and will drive up to 36v at 6A

edit: i used to have the EXACT set up for testing leds and lasers. sorry i no long have pictures of the set up.

why replace it? a car battery both costs more, and limits you to under 12v for testing.... the converter will drop the voltage to anything to you need

edit: and youd still have to charge the car batt. so more money and weight that is not needed
