home audio enclosure for a skar 15 zvx

Recommended Posts

finally getting settled in denver and i have a skar 15 laying around. we have an awesome pa set up in our house, but the low end is a bit lacking. The amp is a crown xls 5000. I was going to just build a 4 cube sealed box and see what that does. But i figured i'd ask the pros first for some input.

. this is just a project/ learning experience.

The simplex 15... gonna try my hands at the ported enclosure. I love what u did with the tuba ht. but that's out of my league. this will be my first box. Is plywood good to work with or should I use mdf? and any recommendation of wood glue or screws?

I might also try the downfiring sealed. we will c when I get the plans. I am familiar with the differences btw ported and sealed in car audio. but still have to do research about them for an ht setup

Plywood is my default material unless I have a really good reason to use MDF (which isn't often). All of Bill Fitzmaurice's designs use 1/2 material, I can get 1/2 baltic birch plywood for about $35 a sheet and for that price it's a no-brainer IMHO. For 3/4" material I usually use Arauco plywood.

For wood glue, it depends on how accurate of cuts you can get. BFM recommends PL Premium, and its a great glue and will do a good job of sealing things up even if your cuts aren't perfect. I prefer to use Titebond II because it cheaper, less messy, and sets up faster, but it won't fill gaps like PL Premium does.

For screws, just standard coarse thread drywall screws work fine. For working with 1/2" material #6 x 1-1/4" would be great, like these: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Grip-Rite-6-x-1-1-4-in-Phillips-Bugle-Head-Fine-Thread-Drywall-Screws-1-lb-Pack-114DWS1/202308452

Be sure to predrill all your holes for the screws first!

I've built a few pairs of his TLAH home theater mains, they kick some serious ass! BFM FTW!

You should try the Tuba HT! I can't imagine what that would be like on a Skar 15 and a Crown 5000.

I forgot to say, when it comes to home audio subs, I'm a fan of ported or horn loaded designs. Sealed can work really well, but you need twice as many subs, twice as much power, and a bunch of EQ. The room also plays a big part though. A small room in a basement with concrete walls is going to work a lot bigger with sealed subs than a huge room with stick built walls.

Its a large room with drywall. so ill shoot for ported... if I develop some serious fabricationskills or grow a huge pair of nuts. I will throw Iit in tuba ht. that sounds like a seriously nasty idea! but baby steps lol. thanks for the help tritty. ill start a build log of it so maybe u can give me some poiners on my fab work
