Karkov
My computer crashed so I am gonna build a new one. My Seagate 1.5T external HD that I normally use to back up all the stuff I want to transfer from old PC to new has decided to act a fool. What external do you guys recommend? What external do you guys use to back things up? I am looking at a WD black something or other. I got a good deal on the Seagate years back otherwise I always run WD IN* my computers, and I always build my own, but after 4 years of being OC'd mine wants to die. Thanks. EDIT: Oh, for what I would use it for I don't want to spend much money, but I also want quality because the stuff i transfer is precious to me. so in order of importance #1 price #2 performance 2007 Chevy Tahoe (SOLD) 12 ~ FI Audio X series 10" w/BP option 2 ~ DC Audio 5.0K @0.67 3 ~ DC Audio 5.0K @1.0 2 ~ PPI 3 way sets (not installed yet) 1 ~ RF T400-4, 1 ~ RF T600-2, 1 ~ RF T600-4 4 ~ CT Sounds 5.25" Strato comps (rear fill only) 1 ~ XS Power D4800 1 ~ XS Power D3400 8 ~ XS Power XP3000 160 stock alt, Mechman 370 Elite, 185 DC Power 320+ Sq. RooTxBeeR
Does it have to be an external? gckless
I back up to three locations for my photos, and then normally one of those three for everything. I use a separate internal WD green HDD, an external WD MyBook, and an external RAID array with WD Blacks in it. If you don't want to spend a lot, either buy a MOBO with a RAID controller or buy an internal RAID controller, and then get internals. Run RAID 1, or if you can get three HDDs run RAID 5. Trick is to back up to multiple locations. HDDs will fail. You don't need fast drives for backup. It would be more prudent to buy two slower drives versus one higher performance drive for backup. "Clipping" is the biggest forum boner now. It's like witchcraft... it automatically explains just about everything people don't understand. hifonix
You could just get a standard HDD and a docking station. Docking station I just got was 40$ from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707192&cm_re=startech-_-17-707-192-_-Product WD Black HDD 1TB $71 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236625 Beauty of this setup is you can turn the HDD off after you make your backup and the docking station can be used for other HDD's. You can get the docking stations with different connections to the PC such as: Esata, USB2/3 Dont trash your old external drive see if you can open the case and remove the HDD most times the little connection board inside the case is what craps out on those external drives. RainStryke
I don't run external drives, I usually just load everything to USB drives... I mean, you can get a USB 3.0 drive for fairly cheap... If I needed something with decent capacity, I would look into a 256GB drive like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233562 Otherwise, Like mentioned before, i'd buy a internal drive and just put it in this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182307

You ALWAYS get what you pay for.
Kade
I run 3x120gb SSD and they monthly backup to an internal 1TB WD Blue. That drive also holds my media. I make a mirror of that drive every so often to an external 1TB USB Fantom Drive. I've never had a problem with WD drives in the past. This is my first fantom drive though. Still running strong after at least 8 years. That's just the way I do it. Since you want to build a new computer... another option that may work for you is salvaging parts from your old PC and making a dedicated NAS. Raid5 would work well. Linux has it's own Raid5-like filing system that supposed to perform well and is super reliable. 2009 Dodge Caliber SXT (Silver) Deck: Pioneer X3600BHS Amps: RF P1000X5 Front: RF P16-S Rear: RF P1694 Subs: 1 RF P3D2-10 Cabling: Stinger 6 channel RCA, RF 4gauge kit, SkyHighCarAudio 16gauge speaker wire.
