How did you set the gain? Maybe it's too high.

I used a SDM and then just turned the tweeter up until is sounded right, Active through head unit, I thought I should try running it active with the amp, but I was unsure if it would make any difference.

Tweeter - http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/car-audio-tweeters-mille-legend-ml280_3/

Mid - http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/car-audio-woofers-hienergy-hv165xl/

At DTS909 I have been trying to tune this for months now, i'm almost at the point where im going to sell it all and start over.

Naw active through headunit would be your best bet so you're good there. What are your crossovers set at on the h/u (frequency and slope)?

Looking at their specs I would do tweets at 2,000hz or 3,000hz with a 24db slope, and mids at 80hz to 2,000hz with a 24db slope. Tune from there, reduce slope to a 12 db or play with frequency points. I would listen to mids alone and then tweets alone to see if you are running into signs of stress at your intended volume levels.

Where are your tweeters located, how are they aimed (at driver seat, at opposite seat headrest or facing one another)? Where are your mids located at, any treatment to doors, solid baffle for driver?
