reedal
Idea just popped into my head. I want to put the USB extension cable that came with my 80prs on my SMD single din meter bezel. Underneath of my LC-1 knob My question is, what tool do I use to cut that small rectangle out? I have a dremel and a rotozip tool (not sure of specifics on the rotozip as I have never used it or looked at it even, it was just given to me to clear out someone's storage unit). I know there are multiple builds on here of members adding USB ports to their dash, center console, and other places, but I do not know of which builds and am not trying to sift through multitudes of pages to not see a how-to. So how can I do this without cutting too much away, cutting too far, etc. Please and thank you! Broke_Audio_Addict
Hit Steve up with a request for a custom bezel. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals. scooter99
My suggestion is this; Get painters tape and put a piece on the front where you want it. Mark the center so you know exactly what is center, otherwise ocd people like me would get in your car for a demo and be like, damn looks good except it's off center. Anyway, on the tape, draw your square/rectangle Use a drill bit to the size of the height of the rectangle. Get a file, and then carefully file it out to just before the lines on the tape. Test fit the fitting, and keep filing a little bit at a time until you get a snug fit. CA Glue it in from behind, and have a beer! Oh remove the tape! reedal
You are awesome scooter. Exactly what I wanted to know. I appreciate it. I could ask Steve for that, but why, when it's something simple enough (despite my not knowing a good way) for me to do myself. And if I happen to mess up at all, shame on me, learn what I did wrong and don't do it again, and I'm out $14 but put a little more money into the big Guy's pocket to put to use towards some more neat things we can all use at some point. jk13
Like Scooter said. Otherwise it's too bad you centered that knob already, could do something like this with a simple round hole: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_541USBCBL/PAC-USB-Extension-Cable.html?tp=120&awkw=75639987505&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=47622752305&awdv=c You could do a thin fascia of plastic or aluminum in the center and move the knob so you have room for both I guess. Edit: Asking Steve is also a solid solution. Probably where I'd start. Static drops are my bag.
ChuckStakes
X2 on the product JK13 recommended. I install those in police and emergency vehicles and they're easy as hell. 3/4" hole and you're done. They're quite a few different makes and prices I believe but that is an option. reedal
Not that that product is a bad idea at all, but why buy something that I essentially already have? It's just simpler to use the cord I have and (in regards to Steve again) the bezel I already have and do it myself. But I do appreciate the advice. Thank you. Not that I will do this because I like the idea of having it in the bezel better, but I also have a handful of those USB chargers that plug into the 12v accessory outlets on the dash/center console that I never use, so if I wanted I could just take one of those apart, put the cable in place of the normal female USB on the face plate, then remove the 12v outlet from the dash and seat the modified face with female USB extension in its place. And voila, same outcome, different housing. Sorry. Got carried away in my thought process of different ways to do it. The bezel is going on the lower pocket of the center console just forward of the cup holders (NBS GM owners for sure know the spot I'm talking about) so I won't be dealing with the cord hanging all over when I plug in my phone or someone else's. At least that is the plan right now. Still not set in stone. jk13
All good. Just had coincidentally been planning my toolbox system/test bench today and ran across those. Easier to make a round hole than a square one and most mount from the front with a lip to keep the amount of finish work down nonexistant. Post up the finished piece when you get there. Static drops are my bag.
