How many batteries for...

Recommended Posts

Following the formula of W = A x V, a batteries resting voltage usually is around 12.8. I went with 11volt just to simulate the where you don't want to go to at 5000 watts, and it is 454amps. Most people like to overkill so 500 can work too lol. What size alternator do you have?

wiring at 1ohm, you want need MUCH reserve, as you wont see full draw of the amp.

id even guess youll see a bit over half of the draw listed.

If it was me, id use what you have, and if you drop, add more. This is also assuming the alt is of good quality, and will do whats claimed of it.

In the past I have seen people use the amp hour rating and make that equal to the amp draw. It sounds like over kill but there is no such thing as too much electrical. The big rig batteries are probably wet cell correct? They will need to be enclosed in a vented box to vent outside the car. When a wet cell battery charges it vents hydrogen and is very explosive. I have seen someone blow the top off of a battery when they removed their jumper cables. I ran wet cells back in the day. If you see water and it doesn't seem to evaporate, its because its acid. Neutralize it with baking soda. I would really try to upgrade / trade to AGM because they are sealed.
