iPad mini 4 to toslink out?

Recommended Posts

you could do a hotspot in your vehicle than apple TV to your DSP via fiber optic.

if nothing changes, nothing changes

im not even dead set on ipad. Basically I just want clean audio into my DSP via toslink. I have a taurus with ford sync, i have the amplified output of the factory dsp feeding my helix dsp, but I recently picked up a nice remote control for my dsp so I can control the volume at that point, I feel like it would be best to have some sort of incar source media player. Ipad looked like a good option, also there are some android tablets.

I'd love just a little black box that I can mount in the car to play media from, and just control that box remotely from my phone but I'm still researching my options.

I have stuff to create a wifi hotspot if I need to, there are alot of ways to do this but I want something reliable and dependable

I use an iPadMIni2 as my HU.

Apple makes a Lightning to HDMI adapter.

Then I run that into an HDMI to Optical adapter.

Then optical to your choice of DSP.

Works pretty good until you try to play videos. The iPad sees the HDMI adapter and thinks you're connected to a TV and therefore black-screens the iPad screen. Very annoying.

I don't know of any other way to just get wired digital audio out of an Apple device. Older devices would but they removed that ability. Thanks Apple -_-

Otherwise you could just Bluetooth to your DSP. Most should do BT.

I was looking at the lightning to usb3 camera connection kit for an ipad mini 4. Looks like its got lightning in for power, and a usb3 out, I might be able to connect a usb DAC to that, optical out of the dac to the DSP. I'm just not sure it would actually work, I'm trying to find someone with one to test with :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Picked up an ipad mini 4 space grey 128gb wifi+verizon cellular model today. Have some DACs around, gotta run upto the apple store tonight and grab the camera connection kit.

I've been trying to research external storage now for the car, looks like most ppl use these wireless hard drives. Anyone have any experience with those devices? Do they need to be turned on and off, or can it just sit tucked away somewhere in the car?

the only thing wireless would be the connection for data between the harddrive and the ipad. I'd rather NOT go wireless since I'll have a powered usb hub available, but I think apple has some of that locked down. Regardless wifi for the actual file transmission to the ipad shouldn't be an issue

FWIW the Apple "Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter" p/n MK0W2AM/A seems to work fine, charges the ipad while simultaneously letting me hook a DAC in, I have 2 different DACs I tried. An older turtle beach advantage micro, and a newer one I ordered on amazon for $20, both work without the message about charging. Just ordered a lightning extension cable, the project is marching on. My DSP board is dead but Helix is working on swapping that out for me, even though my unit is over 3yrs old! Pretty amazing support so far from them.
