New to PC Gaming, Advice Welcome.

Recommended Posts

So this has probably been a long time coming but I finally broke down and want to make the move to PC gaming. I have been a Playstation fanboy since the start but Sony officially not allowing mod support for Fallout 4/Skyrim finally pushed me over the edge. I have a small amount of experience playing on my girlfriends setup (she has a pretty bad-ass Cybertron) playing EVE for about a year but unfortunately it's kind of a dying game. I'm not really sure if I want to just buy a desktop or build my own as I'm not really sure what is required for today's high end games. I mostly play Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Borderlands but that may change in time. Basically I am looking for advice on what equipment would work best for my needs. Any advice and/or direction would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

fuck the plating. look at what the main metal used is. you could buy unicorn blood plated terminals but if its just covering up dog shit, whats the point

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

I buy a decent PC add a bigger power supply to meet the requirements of the graphics card

Almost everyone Ive ever gamed with who built their own gets these random blue screens

I never see that

I have 2 PC's. One with AMD cards that I tinkered with, as well when I first got them. Was when they were still fairly new when windows had it's own bugs to start so I had lots of bug issues. The tinkering gave me BSOD a few times OCing the gpu and cpu. The other NEVER had one and is Nvidia GPU. Both as of late I haven't had a BSOD in A LONG time though. Only time I still have issues is when I decide to do GPU clock changes. Only have issues until I find the stable point. I feel like pre built pc's always come with loads of bloat ware.

See that's another thing I'm concerned about is bloatware, The only things I plan on doing with this is gaming, modding, sketchup pro and enclosure design, I have a laptop for everything else so I would like this to be as smooth and junk free as possible. I want to get the absolute best graphics card I possibly can as I'll be running a 32"+ 4k monitor so I can run Fallout 4 with maxed out graphics mods while keeping a decent frame rate. As far as budget goes I would be willing to spend between $1500 to $2000 for the tower and then $500 to $1000 for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc (I'm a huge fan of the razer chroma stuff). I know that's probably a lot for a first setup but I hate X-Cocks and I'm not too thrilled with Sony any more either so this seems like the best solution. Plus I'm due for a new computer anyway, it's either this or a new laptop.

Only issue I've ever had with BSOD was because my most recent motherboard has an built in Bandwidth-Limiting feature that you can use to track your bandwidth usage and start to throttle it if you are getting near your ISP's monthly limit.

I fixed it by just disabling the feature.

The only other issues I've ever had was when I was super in modding Skyrim and (because mods aren't super optimized) I ran out of VRAM on my old GPU -AMD 290- and I would get objects to load in without a texture for it. I also ran into issues when trying to push the 290 as far as I could with overclocking, but of course both of these are issues I caused myself.

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

As for equipment, I always will recommend getting whatever you can spend the first time around that way you don't have to have a needless upgrade just to play a new game in 2 or 3 years causing you to spend more money getting the same performance later.

Ok so I just had a chat with my girlfriend about her setup and apparently it has a raedon r7 graphics card, amd 8-core processor (not sure what series) at 4.0ghz, and 8 gigs of ram. So as far as basic equipment goes how would that hold up?

I don't like 8-core processors because not many game designers take that many cores into account when programming and you get poor FPS because only 2 or 3 cores are being used.

After I went to Intel/Nvidia from a full AMD build everything about having a computer became much less time consuming just keeping it running right (to my standards).

i also am a huge fan of not having a hot room when gaming and AMD cards run HOT!

Edit: The two cards I had ran hot, AMD 280x and 290. They may have changed their normal operating temperatures, but I doubt it.

I sure hope you are not referring to Steve and I.

We both have insane overclocks on our rigs from the cpu, to the memory, to the gpus.

almost 1Ghz overclock on a cpu running over 5.1Ghz at 1.56volts is stressing the gear beyond its means, but its free performance so I will take advantage of it.

I dont remember the last time Ive seen a bsod on my rig, but I do know I had DX12 errors when Battlefield 1 Beta was going on, I swapped to DX11 and no issues.

From what I recall the game even said that DX12 may cause issues.

Beta game, beta video drivers, what do you expect when you try to max out all your video settings running a high resolution.
