first off, I was wondering if audacity would be good to check for clipping, and then if that would be good enough to keep the sub from clipping (or highs/mids as well)

Second, if you boost the DB of a bass frequency (am I saying that right?) wouldn't that be the same as the bass boost on the head unit/amp? If not, which would be better for the sub/amp - boosting the bass frequency in audacity, (for example, 46hz) in a song as many DB as possible to stay under clipping, or just turning up the bass boost on the amp/head unit? Assume of course that the clipping was taken out of the song with audacity, via lowering the DB of the entire song or some other way

third, when I turn the head unit to 0, it makes a loud thump. when I turn the car off, I get the loud thump, plus a little scratch from the sub for a brief second, as if it was blown/broken/you took one side and pushed on it instead of taking 2 sides to test if it's broken or w/e

fourth, if my box is tuned to 30hz, does that mean it's going to produce the best/deepest bass for songs with 30hz or closest to it in the bass line? I opened up 3 songs that hit hardest and they were closer to 50hz than 30hz. Could my box have been built wrong?

bass boost on an amp/HU is 45hz only and if i understand what your saying when you say boost the db a a bass frequency you mean if a song has peaks at 33,43,52hz at 0db you what to know if taking those notes and say bump the db up so it would look like 33,43,52 at 3db then no thats not the same as bass boost on an amp or HU its a better way to make the bass louder but sometimes makes the quality of the bass bad. hope others will chime in on your other questions.

as far as your box question goes, generally your box will peak a few hz higher than the actually tuning of the box. you have to rememeber it also depends on the resonant frequency of your car so that also plays a factor along with the positioning of the box. if your car peaks at say 50htz and your box is tuned to 30 you will probably peak somewhere in the 40's. also if the box is closer or further from a wall or seat in the car it will change. there are many factors changing where your set up will peak, so that's normal.

Also when you turn the head-unit on and off your getting a pop from the speakers because the Radio is turning on faster than the amp. once the amp turns on it is shooting a quick signal out to the speakers causing a short "pop" sound. it's pretty common and won't damage anything, but if it's bothering you you can go out and buy a pop stopper, which is basically a relay that goes between the head-unit and the amp stopping this from happening.
