Does cone aera have anything to do with SQ?

Recommended Posts

Does a bigger cone yield higher SQ? I know SQ is mostly the box but what about the woofer? How does an 8" compare to an 18"? What are things to look for in a SQ sub? Big coil, High excursion?

Yes and no. One goal of SQ is to have a somewhat flat sound stage. Say you have 2 Fi 15" Qs in the back on a Sundown 2500D. You would want more mids and highs and more power for them in order to have a flat soundstage.

But, say you have a DC Level 2 on a Rockford P300-1bd. Having 10 mids and 10 highs isnt what youd want, because you most likely wont have a flat sound stage..it would peak because of the mids and highs.

Thats my understanding atleast

O geez SQ is NOT and i repeat NOT meant to be loud at all. I would never use an 18" in a SQ setup. I would run maybe two 10"s sealed but thats it. Your mids and high are supposed to blend very "smoothly" which mean bass isn't louder then mids and highs and vice versa.

aka no peaks/ flat frequency response

explain to him what you mean by "flat sound stage"

No frequencies have peaks, so no frequency sounds a lot louder. This could be tested with an RTA (I think thats what its called).

I would...all day long...and I used to compete SQ in IASCA (early 90's FWIW) an 18 can easily reproduce lower frequencies than a 10. sure, if I use 3 10's I can get the same effect, but as long as I keep tuning the way I do (50Hz Brickwall XO) the snap from a small sub doesn't matter. My mids make up for that. back when I was in the lanes if your car didn't FREQ at 130dB you were DQed...pink noise at 130dB or you were done...so, yes, SQ can be loud....but clarity comes first

I put a Peavey Low Rider 18" in my buddy's escort and it sounded like GOD!
