how much lighter is a sheet of bitch vs mdf.. ive always wanted to know

i have never weighed it, but i would guess a 4x8 birch sheet weighs about 70% as much as the same sheet of mdf

I like mdf. Its a lil heavier but much easier to work with in my opinion, doesn't splinter when cutting or routering, and as long as you brace properly you can have a ton of power and multiple subs..

=P i have my MDF box, ill make a birch one this winter in wood shop, and see watch one i prefer =P... the only downfalls i'm hating on the MDF right now is how easy it cracks, its like handling a little baby while getting hit by a car..... hard to work with!... well not necessarily hard to "work with" but you just have to be careful about drilling, screwing , and screwing in the screws a little to deep, it will also "crack then"

I am a oak ply guy myself...

Strong as birch and IMO it looks better.

It may be $15 more than MDF, but it smells good when its cut, and it is MUCH MUCH lighter than MDF.

With sound you actully want the panels to be heavier. Its a way to dampen the box. People are saying ply is stiffer. Well it is but it isnt if that makes sence.. Long storie short, birtch resonates more then mdf does. Mdf is better imo

Fiberglass and resin the inside then.

I've used mdf and birch, ill never go back to mdf again. Lighter, stronger, doesn't get destroyed when it gets wet, less dust, when u sand it won't gum up the paper. Def worth the money but before you buy it at a big chain store like lowes or home depot or wherever OS local, check the contractors lumber yards. They are usually cheaper and better quality.
