when i go to build my box ( once i get me a table saw ) i will be using 3 layer birch ... seems like it will be lightest due to less glue in between layers and still strong !! i hate mdf !

i got 5 layer 3/4 mdf at home depot. it can take the air from my smd so you should be fine. it was iirc $45 a sheet and i bought two sheets.

have you checked out lowes? they had my 5 layer birch but were a little more expensive.
