Plasma's work well in dark rooms, and LCD's in bright rooms.... I have a 52" plasma in my dark livingroom.... AWESOME!!!!!!!

Don't plasma's get ghosted images if it's mistreated? I have a 26" LCD, I just heard stories about plasmas.

And for brands, Samsung, maybe Toshiba, Sony (if you can find one that's in your price range), more mainstream stuff like that. I have a Westinghouse TV, never heard of that brand in my life. And yesterday, I learned that that company made WWII helmets.

Anywho, were you planning on getting this in a store or online?

I worked in best buy's home theater department for a while, and i absolutely hate advising people on their TV choice.

basically you get what you pay for. my personal preference is samsung, i think their screens are the most vivid. but honestly if you hid the logo on the tv and they all had the same frame, you couldn't tell if you were looking at a samsung or a sony or an LG, etc. one TV might be better than the other, but the differences are often very minute.

40" is where you will START to notice a difference between 720p and 1080p. which is another thing i hate, some companies will have 24" tv that's 1080p and people will pay more for that over the 720p 24".

don't be afraid of plasmas. they are great in dark rooms and honestly they probably have the best picture quality of any of the types of tv's. go easy on them, though. they get hot and burn in is a definite possibility. make sure to either get it calibrated or make sure you turn some of the brightness and contrast settings down so it's not working so hard.

if you don't know what calibration is, it's basically like tuning your amp to make sure it's performing it's best and not clipping, and its just as important. essentially what happens, is a tech will come out to your house with this $10k device that reads all the lighting in your room. the device plugs into your tv's service port and gets into settings and menus that you can't get into (even if you manage to, you will void every warranty you have on the tv).

from there the settings and everything are tweaked as close to perfection as possible. in the end your tv will last longer and have the BEST POSSIBLE PICTURE. this makes plasmas less likely to burn in as well.

lastly if you're buying from wal mart, slap yourself and walk out. if you're buying from best buy, get the protection plan on the tv. i know you might think, "you're just saying that because they told you to", but that's not the reason. as an ex employee, i still truly believe in the plan. it is simply miles better than any "extended warranty" or "manufacturers warranty" out there. the plan covers EVERYTHING that can go wrong with the tv (unless you throw a wii remote through the tv... then you're on your own). for plasma TV's this means if you burn in your tv, even if it was on purpose, geek squad will come out to your house for no charge (the manufacturer charges $75-$100 per trip) and they will diagnose and repair you TV on the spot for no charge. they even let you replace your tv with a better one if it's beyond repair.

/end rant.

I have a 50' plasma, 55' LCD, and 32' LCD, and I personally like the LCD's better. Samsung of course, LG is ok, the only thing I hate about my plasma is if you leave something on it for a long period, it leaves that ghost image. I would say go with the LCD.

Did hear a story about a guy who went on holidays for 2 weeks and his housemate decided to put a gay porn dvd on his tv in his room, paused it during a scene and left the tv turned on, when the guy came back from his holiday he had the gay scene ghosted onto his plasma tv  not sure if it was true or not but still

i shook this one kids hand and it just folded in mine. long story short i fucked his girlfriendso.. yeah..

You forgot to mention viewing distance matters as well.

And even if, I'll always take a 1080 24 inch over a 720 24 inch. ESPECIALLY if I'm gaming or if its for computer use. I mean my laptop is 15" and is 1080. There is no way in hell I'm going back to 1366 x 768 on anything bigger that 13 inches. And 1366x768 is a higher resolution than 1280 x 720.

As far as ghosting goes, most modern plasmas have systems that minimize the chance of image retention. Its a virtual non-issue. Is it possible to happen? Definitely. Is it likely through normal use? Nope.

Also, after the extreme headache I've had with Best Buy extended warranty, I'm never getting another one from them. 30 days without my phone is ridiculous.
