htanton93
I have heard a lot of people saying that if you let your voltage drop too often or too much it can cause your amp to go bad after a wile. Is this true?? Quote - 2003 Jetta GLi VR6 - Kenwood HU - MTX 9500 12'' - Soundstream Rub1.2500
Brandon15zzz
To much yes I could see how that would hurt it. Start at 14 and drop to 7 if the amp didn't shut itself down before 7. But dropping a lot as long as its not below 11.5-12 I don't think it would "technically" lessen the life of an amp. SnowDrifter
IIRC it has something to do with the efficiency of the mosfets within the amplifier. More voltage drop = less efficiency = more heat/strain on them which in turn causes clipping. IH8PunkRok
think of it this way you need food to work the harder you work the less food you get. eventually it will catch up to you and you will get weak. but your boss is an ass and makes you work hard still. will you get weaker? Wicks
An amp with a regulated power supply will work to supply the amp with a constant and stable supply. If the voltage drops, then the power supply musty draw more current to keep the same power level (V * I = P). The power supply mosfets all have internal resistance so the more current that goes through them, the more they heat up. I^2 * R = P. Power loss through heating increases with current squared so small increases in current will induce a big increase in power loss. To the point....don't let your voltage drop.
