Next step: Double DIN headunit install.

So it may look like E46 Bimmer's are already set up for a double DIN but that would be a big negative.

17-stock-HU.jpg

Pulling the HU out and you find this...

19-HU-single-DIN.jpg

Double DIN face but.........a single DIN body. :glare:

Here you can see why:

18-HU-out.jpg

There is an air duct in the way that the HU must fit around.

In order to make a double DIN fit, some involved fab work is involved.

Here's a close-up:

20-dash-vent.jpg

No going back now...first cuts to the air duct.

21-vent-cutout.jpg

Inside the air duct is a vent door with a connecting rod to another door on the other side.

22-vent-door.jpg

This door actually swings in the way of the double DIN bracket and must be cut in half.

23-vent-cutout.jpg

Here is the vent door that has been removed and cut in half.

24-door-cut.jpg

So the small piece of the door needed to be glued back in place while the bigger piece rotates.

The door has some soft rubber around it and wouldn't glue very well. So I ended up taking some bulk plastic that I bought from Parts Express

and cut out a replica that would glue much easier.

25-door-fab.jpg

Here's the small piece I made glued in.

26-door-glue.jpg

The connecting rod between vent doors gets in the way and needs to be notched.

The kit I got from eBay included a small metal offset to do this but it wasn't strong enough to handle the pressure (the small little screws would easily pop out of the plastic), so I pulled out the trusty JB Weld and epoxied that sucker. Looks like shit, but she's STRONG now!

27-rod-notch.jpg

Adding weatherstripping around the opening to help seal it.

28-foam.jpg

Bracket installed in the cutout. I added some spare Alpha-Damp to the bracket as insulation since the air duct gets pretty warm with the heat on and I didn't want it to degrade any of the wires behind the HU.

29-notch-complete.jpg

More headaches.... :aggressive: The double DIN bracket I got had rounded edges and didn't fully seat the HU.

30-bracket-tight.jpg

This wouldn't allow the HU to properly sit inside the bezel.

Ok PITA bracket, meet my new friend, Mr Sledge!

31-sledge.jpg

I had to cut the welds and break off the side braces.

JB Weld to the rescue...again.

That's better:

32-bracket-fixed.jpg

After a some struggle, I wedged the HU in place and it fits! :drink40:

More pics coming. I don't have all the trim back in place yet because I still have work to do with the center console.

Door speaker update:

After looking around the forum for a while and hearing great things about them, I pulled the trigger on some Hertz HSK130's.

39-Hertz-HSK130.jpg

I played it safe initially with the 5.25" mids which only required a small mounting bracket that I got from Crutchfield.

Made the install really simple. The brackets interfaced perfectly with the goofy three-tab factory speakers.

We'll see how I like these before I tackle a custom door pod.

One of the door panels removed and partially gutted:

40-stock-door-panel.jpg

One of the mids installed with the interface bracket.

41-Hertz-mid.jpg

Tweeter inside one of the included mounting brackets.

42-Hertz-tweeter.jpg

Mounted to the stock tweeter location.

43-tweeter-mount.jpg

Fits nice with not too much modification.

Wires run to the tweet/mid.

44-Hertz-door.jpg

The blue wire is 12ga Knu Kord. Input to the x-over is also Kord.

Clear wire is 14ga speaker wire from Part Express. They had a sale, $9 for 50'. Not as flexible as the Kord but it gets the job done and is plenty for the tweeter.

Custom mounted the x-over to the inside of the door panel.

46-Hertz-xover.jpg

The door panel itself was too thin to put screws through it so I cut some bulk 1/8" plastic to the same size and epoxied it to the panel.

Gave me just enough thickness to screw the x-over down nice and snug.

Here's the completed door panel.

45-Hertz-door-complete.jpg

Added some AlphaDamp to the door panel to secure the wires.

This is the Kord from the highs amp to the x-over input.

38-door-wire-run.jpg

Ran through a grommet in the car body and into the stock wire harness for the doors.

The panels are clipped back on the doors but not fully screwed in place. I want to hear the Hertz's first in case I need to pull the panels off again.

It is nice to have door panels again! I drove around for a few weeks with no drivers-side door panel. Was a pain yanking on the door opening cable to get out of the car...

Side-note: I started the box build this past weekend... :drink40:

Feels good to be cutting some MDF again after about 6 years.

Everything's coming together nicely and should be pretty sweet when all completed, I have some ideas brewing.

Stay tuned, I have more pics coming before I can get to the sub box!

Nice work fitting the double din in there. That's determination.

Thanks!

No kidding... :trippy:

Don't know that I'd try that again now that I know what it takes.

..something about stuffing 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag.

Fingers are crossed that I won't ever have to pull it back out...

No Sir, but it was tempting...

I saw a few threads about it between Ray and Orionstang and figured I'd better play it safe and tracked down an authorized dealer here.

Cost quite a bit more but they are legit and should be fully warrantied.
