I have an '03 Subaru Forester X w/ 4 speed auto.

I'm wondering if there is any possible harm that can come to the transmission if I put it in neutral at stop lights. I don't like the feeling of the car wanting to pull forward when I am stopped - my previous vehicle was a 6 speed manual.

And, I figure that it might help fuel economy too at those long lights so the engine isn't turning against the torque converter.

I'm concerned about increased wear on the 1st gear clutch pack by doing so. Would it be enough to significantly effect the life of the transmission?

And would it get starved for oil? I seem to recall that the torque converter acts as an oil pump on some transmissions.

I'm not exactly sure on this neither, But i wouldn't think so. The only difference I think, is its the same as park, Except in park, it locks the Axles / Drive shafts, and neutral is the same, minus the locking axle / driveshaft gear. I can't think of the actual name, other then a lock into the spline or something like that. Someone taught me, but forgot.

I do it all the time though, but popping it back into drive without brake ( if you do it. ), that im not sure if it hurts it or not. If anything, i just keep it in neutral, pop the hand brake, and then when its time to take off, pop it back in drive and release the hand brake.

Off topic though, lol. Handbrake's are also essential for people riding your ass, Slowly come to a stop light with it, and when you take off, that obvious person realizes you have no brake lights or so it seems. Trolling ftw. If they rear end you, its their fault, and shouldn't be riding your ass. Sorry, just had to throw that there lmao.

Wow, not sure how I managed to post this in the exterior care section. Fail on my part...

Could a mod move this for me please?

Just put your foot on the brake buttercup. No reason to risk increased wear.

it won't do anything for you putting it into neutral. Other than having to shift from neutral to drive every time. You also have to think when you are in drive your rpms are lower then they are in drive, so putting into neutral will not save you fuel. Just put your foot on the brake.

Thats cool. Im way too old to be upset by shit like that. Your name is winston. Your own parents hated you even before you were born.

My penis is bigger than your penis

I'm far from loud and my roof/headliner flaps around like Adam's ass on a windy day. I think it depends more on the structure of the vehicle.

it wont hurt your car butttt if you shift into nuetral before you come to a complete stop you can snap the shift linkage. as ive had it done to one of my cars due to an asshole friend driving it smh

whats wrong with fat chicks? they are like mopeds, as long as your friends dont see you riding it, they are a blast! hahah

I am dumb as a stump. I live in the south and we are all dumb here.

Sounds like you need so go back to your manual transmission :good:

Haha in all seriousness it seems like the short time that you are in neutral at the stop light isn't long enough to effect anything. I guess in the long term it may add up

  • 2 weeks later...

all soobs do this.....mine did it too....then i swapped a 5 speed in it :D

maybe you should consider it considering yours is an XT...... which is a turbo no?

the tranny i would go with would be the 6 speed for that though if it is a turbo.......

all in all i used to do it ALL the time..... EVEN when still going like 20 mph id pop it in N when coming to a red light..... THAT is probably bad for it since its not getting the tranny fluid it needs but i knew i was doin the swap so i didnt care lol

bottom line is that these subaru auto trannys are pretty tough and can actually hold more HP than a 5-6 speed can..... believe it or not.....just dont try a neutral drop lmao

i think there real i was looking through that guys stuff he sells and it looks like he finds stuff at auctions and just sells it

Yea, it looks like someone got the mids about a month ago....shit. If I had a whole Hertz front stage my ears would jizz all over my cheeks.
