what are some methods of makeing the connection better/faster? i know mine isnt what many would call slow but im wondering if there isnt more there that i dont know about :^

-Remove any Virus, Adware or Spyware that you may have

-Go to www.testmy.net and follow Vanbuuren's instructions using Cablenut to tweak your connection

-You can also test at www.testmy.net

-Move your modem/router away from power lines

-Use cat5e/cat6 cable (yes it makes a difference)

-Reduce Windows' reservable bandwidth to 0% (you cannot do this if you have XP HOME....only PRO)

-Disable anything that you do not need in the Local Area Connection properties (The only thing that you'll need is TCP/IP  and Client for Microsoft Networks, and maybe file sharing if you have a VPN

-Delete your windows prefetch

-Tweak Internet Explorer/Firefox to render the pages faster

....I could go on and on  ;)

Sure...  :^

-Reduce your reservable bandwidth

==========================

Click >>> START >>> RUN

Type in >>> gpedit.msc  >>> Click ENTER

Your Group Policy Editor should open up.

There are two main categories: Computer Configuration and User Configuration.

Double click on COMPUTER Configuration >>> Then double click on Administrative Templates >>>Then double click on NETWORK

Then double click on QOS Packet Scheduler >>> Then double Click on LIMIT RESERVABLE BANDWIDTH

A properties box should come up

There are three selections  NOT CONFIGURED, ENABLED and DISABLED

CLICK or select  ENABLED

Then below, reduce the bandwidth limit to 0%

What this does is it prevents Windows from reserving 20% of your internet bandwidth by default for shyt like automatic updates.

-------------------------------------------------

Delete your prefetch

===============

Double CLICK My Computer >>> Then  double click C: >>> Double click on the WINDOWS folder

Then look for a folder within the WINDOWS folder called "PREFECTCH"

I want you to DELETE (yes delete) everything inside that folder.

-------------------------------------------------

Disable things you do not need in Local Area Connection properties

=================================================

CLICK START >>> click Control Panel

Within the Control Panel click NETWORK CONNECTIONS

Double click on your Local Area Connection....(you may have more than one, so select the one you use for your internet)

The status box should open and should show the GENERAL tab

click PROPERTIES down on the bottom which will open the properties box

THERE, the only things that should be selected is TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks if you have a network

If you have a network where you SHARE files, then you may have File and Printer Sharing on.

If not, NEVER have this selected or Hackers will PWN you.  ;)

Right now, the only thing I have checked is TCP/IP

I have 2 computers on this router but I don't share files or log on to the other computer through this one so I don't need anything else

---------------------------------------------------------------

Net Failure Cache Time while browsing

============================

Everytime you get a page failure/Dns failure (This page cannot be displayed), your computer makes a note of that in a log. Eventually when this log gets huge it WILL start to slow things down

So CLICK START >>> RUN >>>type in regedit  >>> CLICK ENTER

Be very careful here because if you mess with the wrong thing, you WILL have to reload WINDOWS to get your computer to boot  ;)

To your left, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

expand SYSTEM

expand CurrentControlSet

expand Services

expand DnsCache

click once on Parameters

To your RIGHT, there may be 3 parameters:

1. NegativeCacheTime

2. NegativeSOACacheTime

3. NetFailureCacheTime

If you have these parameters, make sure their values are 0x00000000 (0)

If not, you can create them by clicking EDIT up top...then NEW  then DWORD value (once for each parameter)

Don't worry, once you create it, the value should be zero by default.

And you're all set  :^

whats latency? also, every1 i kno with dsl and cable, every1 says cable is wayyyyy faster than dsl.

Latency is the RTT (Round Trip Time) of a packet in milliseconds. Thus, lower is better. You will notice that if your latency is incredibly low, your web pages open up faster.

Note** latency (speed) should not be mistaken with download BANDWIDTH.

Cable IS faster than DSL. But, it is shared bandwidth, and so when everybody is using it (or uploading) the speed suffers tremendously. On the other hand, DSL uses a private line to you. So other people using their internet connection doesn't affect you AS much.

Let me know if you have more questions

so is that y when ur in a big city to get dsl instead of cable?

Precisely.

The Cabl3  is only a problem IF The ISP doesn't do what it takes to be able to handle the traffic. In some places, they 'oversell' the bandwdth and the contention is really high at peak times.
