Riley Evan Houser
Okay, I drive a 2004 Pontiac Bonneville, has a 140 amp stock alternator. I've done the big 3, I have a XS Power 975 for my second battery. I have 2 SA 15s on a Soundstream TX1.2000D and a JL Audio JX360/4 amp. After I've done everything I'm experiencing minimal voltage drop but after a long while of bumping my amp will go into protect mode because I'm assuming the alt just can't keep up. So basically I've narrowed my options down to a few. Upgrade my alt, Stinger 225 amp for $380, Stinger 275 amp for $450, Mechman 270 amp for $450, or a DC 300 amp for $500. But my other option would be to upgrade my stock battery to a XS Power D3400 for $260. What should I do? Any help would be great, thanks! Edit: SA's are D4s wired down to 1 ohm Edited July 27, 2012 by Riley Evan Houser

Kranny
i hope you're not measuring the voltage from the needle gauge on the dash. is the amp hot when it goes into protect? what power/ground wires are you using? brand of these wires? where is your amp grounded to? specifically how did you tune your gains? is bass boost on? or another "bass" feature like Loud? edit: you have to have the big 3 done, also. if you haven't done it, do it asap. Amp is warm, but not close to hot. KnuKonceptz kca 1/0 for power wire on big 3. Welding cable ofc for grounds. Amps are grounded under carpet directly to the frame, directly on bare metal. Tuned gains with voltmeter it's pushing about 1200 watts. Bass boost is on. Is it because you need a fairly serious electrical to push 1 ohm? Kranny
turn bass boost off. i have no idea why you think you need it. measure the voltage directly at the amp (dc voltage) when the amp goes into protect Edited July 27, 2012 by Kranny
Riley Evan Houser
I'll definitely do that, to both things. Can I ask what does the bass boost do? Make the amp overheat?
Riley Evan Houser
If this helps.. If I bump pretty hard for about 30 minutes to an hour it goes into protect mode and about 15 second later it turns back on
Kranny
I'll definitely do that, to both things. Can I ask what does the bass boost do? Make the amp overheat? it boosts the bass signal. typically at 45hz. so if you're already pushing your amp to its intended limit without bass boost, turning it on will make you clip at and around that 45hz note. clipping leads to heat. Riley Evan Houser
Okay, I get what you're saying. I have the amp turned down so it's not pushing 2k, about 11-1200ish. It hasn't gotten hot on me yet. Would it have anything to do with the bass knob being hooked up?
Kranny
maybe. depending on the manufacturer. some companies make the amps bass boost knobs, and others make them gain attenuators.
