Excessive Amperage Alt **Tested @ 239a this morning**

Recommended Posts

glad you went with excessive, that's where I'll be gettin mine from too, a 300 amp alt for $490 shipped, the 270 from Mechman was the same price for my car.

What the f**k is an appropriate signature supposed to look like?

I'm not sure how you would load test a 300+ amp alt let alone a 400+ amp alt. Do you realize what kind of heat the load tester would have to dissipate to test that? try this, find a 5000 watt light bulb and see how close you can get to it, that alt is putting out 14.4v at 400+ amps, that is over 5000 watts of heat dude.

edit

typo

so tell me... how can he then rate it at 425a then. if he couldnt clamps that from the alt?

yea i have big 3 done already.. I forgot to talk about casing... i got a 200a alt. he said it does more but he just rates them at 200.. but i hope he doesnt use the Cs130 casing ive heard from numerous people that it sucks balls, i left him a VM like 30 min later saying id prefer the ad244 casing if for nothing else than it will fit more vehicles if i were to sell later..

  • 2 weeks later...

So I got my alt in the other day.

Its a direct replacement, as the way it fits, not much else will fit w/o some modding or w.e which im not willing to do.

Its a 200a unit which Nate at EA said tested out at 250a. He originally told me that itll do more than 200a but he just rates em at 200a to be safe..

Anyway his CS was pretty good, and it got to me fairly quickly. its going in tomarrow.

I put up a small vid of my current voltage situation.

http://www.facebook....27012795&type=2

embedding > me i tried and searched and nothing..

but as you can see the voltage goes >16 several times.. only happens when its cold. after it warms up I get a constant 15.0+ but not 16..

amp is in protect so i know the 16.0 is pretty right as far as the meter goes..

Installed my alt today..

So I have some concerns or maybe Im just not understanding this right.

First the positives:

It took me about an hour or less to take the old unit out and swap in the new EA one. Bolted right up.

now hear me out---

Big 3 is already done in 1/0

bat to strut tower

alt mount to strut tower (engine ground)

alt to bat

The amp is rated 2k or so should pull around 200a

Now imo idk maybe ive got this wrong , but

the amp most likely isnt pulling 200a for one

the alt is suppossed to put out 200 but he benched it at 250..

with two big ole batts

I shouldnt be seeing drop into the 11s.. like wtf is going on. It only does a shade better than my old stock alt.

Theres a point in the video where voltage is up some around 12.5-13v but i had the revs at like 2500 rpm.. like oops

I guess i was hoping for almost no drop especially if the alt is doing more than 200 like 250 as he mentioned

Ill call him tomarrow, but im just making sure im not going crazy here..

I mean my voltage is steady at 14.5 while driving with normal leves of music like listening to talk radio etc and it doesnt bounce around or spike in the 16s and cause my amp to protect anymore. My lights used to pulse up and down and the revs would go up and down too.. a tiny bit and it doesnt do that anymore either. So its a solid alt, but i could have gotten all that from a brand stock alt.. the reason i spend the extra $$$$ is for the H/O part of that.. which it doesnt look like i have..

anyway heres the video i made its kinda grainy at parts, as i took it on my phone.. sorry about that

Any help etc is appreciated, thanks

well your car does need 80ish amps to operate, and once the alt is hot it wont do the 200 more like 170ish. Therefore you basically only have 90amps left for the system and the battery reserve. Running that crescendo at half ohm is going to become less efficient, so instead of using 200amps of current it'll use more. but anyways check all your connections make sure they are tight and secure and clamp the alt.

edit: also check for belt slip

Good info here.....

Only thing I wanted to add is after all that you might want to consider another batt after seeing you're running at .5

I understand that. But if you assume numbers are correct.. about the car using 80a then what do you think happens on the stock 105a alt.. that's hillarious if you think im bass racing etc on less than 20a of alt.. no way.
