Everything in a car should work without a battery as long as the alternator doesn't need an exiter wire to make it charge. Lot's of cars will run with no battery at all and just off the alternator.

to answer the question, anywhere you can get a path back to the ground post on the battery, good or bad, its a ground

The ground is what I drive on. My positive is my return path for my negative electrons.

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)

Let me explain further.

With the battery connected your ground ref is the battery neg, everything sources from that point until the vehicle is started!!! Once the vehicle is started your ground ref is still the battery neg, but if it becomes interupted by some means, battery dies, explodes whatever, the ground ref is now the alternator case. Since the alternator is now your power supply and battery is no longer supplying anything if neg is removed. Or positive for that matter. You are just shifting the reference point to ground when the vehicle is running vs off and just acc running ie the computer/lights/radio.

Alternator casing is the absolute ground when vehicle is running.

What if you pull 200 amps and your alt only does 150, where is ground alt case or battery neg? LOL

I would say no where is ground. Ground is added when you put a battery in ( ex. stock under hood) and you ground the negative terminal to the frame. that Ground's the whole frame. So technically the whole frame is ground. Now, where is the best ground ? Thats a different story..

is having your amps "grounded" to the negative of the battery better than the frame of the car? what do the pros do?

Buss bar neg if it is practical, but if not frame is fine as long as you have frame ground to support that to the neg of the bank.
