Lexus ISF Tuned with 6 Mic Array - Thanks Rockford Fosgate!

Recommended Posts

Oh man this is freak !!!! They should do a better software for the tuning of that 3 sixty.3 ... Can you imagine ... spend 800 box and need 2 guys from rockford fosgate to tune up . I love the good sound quality but this is pain. I'm jealous loll

i don't "need" 2 guys from RF to come do a tune up. I know how to use the software. Its easy. Tuning is a pain for anyone serious about it, but the software is not a pain.

also, i don't own a 6 array mic setup. It was a privilege and an honor for them to fly out just to help me get it sounding as good as we can get it though.

I could bring an sq sheet and judge that thing for ya again I heard some sq world champs car would like to see how this stacks up

Also ear faituge is a bitch for every 15 mins of tunning by ear you should take an hour break

Lol at people not know what it takes to set up an sq ride HOURS and hours apon hours to set up we just bought a 1500 dollar single mic rta to set up our rides for sq

Don't laugh too hard there sir lol. Never done one or heard one no clue how this really works. Is the real goal to have it as close to perfect flat or is it different?

flat is the oldschool way of scoring high......but it has never meant "better sound".

Flat usually sounds like dog shit.

Thanks. Still learning and slowly catching up from oldschool lol.

So.. What exactly does SQ tuning do?

it makes staging high and gives you center with a lot more

in a true sq car the sound will be comming at you from the center of the windsheild but will also sound like someone is sitting on you hood playing the the insturments and singing to you from there also while its coming at you it should play outside the a pillars best way to explain it is the reproduction of live music in front of you... its also a lil hard to get use to for me it was. to have the music coming at you in your face and not seeing any speakers there knowing that the speakers are in the doors and to the side of you is a lil crazy

Have you ever had your woofers blown?

Interesting exchange. Guys, the 6-mic array and the associated hardware are utilized to provide the nth degree in performance from a well designed good sounding audio system and they can easily point the tuner in the direction of addressing minor problems before any equalization is done - IE frequency response issues caused by phasing issues at crossover points between speakers, improper time alignment settings, etc.

The process of equalization itself is one of personal preference. As Steve points out, "flat" typically sounds dull and lifeless - especially as we grow older and our hearing "tops out" at 16 Khz . . . or lower. The old saying, "the one who equalizes least equalizes best" really rings true in this area. The process of equalizing should be to remove peaks and dips in the response and have a somewhat smooth response from octave to octave. This is something that only a handful of people I've encountered since the 80s can do by ear - Mark Fukuda and Terry Soohoo are the two standouts that were able to demonstrate this to me personally. For the rest of us, having tools such as these at our disposal can help to get us there.

FWIW, my mustang underwent the 6-mic array when I was employed at Rockford in like 2006. Mark Fukuda and I got it pretty close by ear and then Mike Cozza took it from there with the 6-mic array. He made several very slight changes to the equalization over a period of several hours. The results were amazing to my ears - so amazing that I've never touched it since. It's unbelievable.

Steve, be sure and save a back-up of that file and document the gains of each amplifier by voltage at a set volume setting should you ever be required to swap an amp down the road.

I wasn't sure how to make a youtube video about this that was "exciting"....because tuning is rigorous and time consuming. On top of that, its hard to translate SQ over a handheld camera. Its easy to SHOW you how loud the tahoe is, a hair, bottle, or whatever "trick" will always do......but SQ is something you need to be sitting in the car to understand. This was not to exciting but IMO its all very interesting at least. I have never seen a 6 mic array before so that was pretty damn cool and a privilege to experience this. Thanks again to RF for spending the time and of course MONEY to fly 2 guys out and ship the equipment! RF FTW for sure!! :D

I have a couple of questions, if you care to answer.

1. Did you lose much output from your front stage after getting everything set

2. Since you have no center channel speaker, Are you happy with your imaging as far as the lead singer goes? (hope that made sense)

Thanks snafu for that info it cleared it up for me. I also know I won't be setting up for sq anytime time soon lol. Steve that vid was awesome in explaining how it all ties together for dummies like me lol. The back in the day TV static sound was a few moons ago lol. You can actually hear a difference from before and after on your system. Which is very impressive since it's on a camera and not in person. I love the reaction of the first sound test when it was a little hot.
