Thespeakershoppe
Well I just did 2 Skar ma-8's in a 2012 KIA Sorrento on a Skar 1500 and they pound. Only drawback is they need more depth to the motor. Spacers maybe? They get down and I just beat on em for over an hour on claped 1500+ watts and they take it great but you can tell there is a lot more travel to the surround and other parts of the suspension before the coil bottoms out. Now that is on my test bench with way more than rated but my point is on this particular sub I think spacers are needed to let the suspension travel more. Maybe something to think abou? mrd6
Bear with me here If i use sub terminology wrong but hopefully this makes sense: To deal with the voice coil size/suspension travel problem, why not design some kind of tapered coil former? Basically, you have the former for the size for your 3 inch coil to get your thermal power handling up and then taper it in above that to be thinner where the spiders attach giving them more space to be longer and allow for more travel? Granted, I imagine this would increase the mounting depth quite a bit and require many more custom tooled parts but, could it be worth it? Has this been done before? TRTC360
Make them for all levels? Edit: Specifically Level 5 If you want prices to skyrocket then sure, pretty sure that was one of the reasons that the old m1 level 6's were so expensive, custom tooled baskets weren't too cheap. CJ18
Yall want a high excursion shallow mount sub, please explain to me how you would accomplish this. To get a shallow sub, you have an extremely short coil and a much shorter motor. Then you would have to tool a basket specifically for just this. High excursion and shallow mount are two things that just dont belong in the same sentence.

It's harder to find something as rigid as a cone but flat. PPI used to have a honeycomb material cut 1/2 inch thick that seemed to work pretty well. I doubt you'd get 20-30mm Xmax in one of those, but it'd be great to see one with more than 7mm. Quote 2007 Pacifica Rebuild. Less quiet. Still not loud.
