Possibly. But the caps charge so fast that it should be fine. He has dual alts on his Tahoe he has his stock and his 300 but the 300 is hooked up for his system. Like I said we have testing to do. He got his subs last week. He has everything except amps.

I think he said his amps are like 2 weeks out there being hand built and made to be a matching pair. already has caps in, box built and he was supposed to be putting his subs in today.

Greetings everyone ... newbie on the forum, 1st post.

Hi Tony; have your books. Been doing audio and car stereo a very long time ... but learned a few things, like not using a VOM on a computer controlled car, from your books. I am a firm believer in lifelong learning.

Back on topic ... Tony (or anyone ... I don't know the personalities here yet) ... the results of this thread were not a surprise to me and are in line with my way of thinking about capacitors from the time they first arrived on the scene about 20 years ago. But I have another issue with using them in the proper configurations. The issue for me is fire/accident safety.

It seems to me that having the effective current storage capacity, which will discharge in milliseconds if shorted, and considering the trunk area is the second most common part of a car damaged in accidents (1st is front end) presents a significant safety issue for ordinary road-going cars. I don't think it's a huge problem for a Sound Competition vehicle, since these are not typically daily drivers. But I have always avoided audio capacitor storage solutions in my "regular" vehicles., basically for fear of fire, which I personally believe would be inevitable.

Not trying to come across as knowing it all ... just suggesting that because of this issue, I pretty much simply had a go/no-go conclusion right from the start; leaving cost + capacity questions irrelevant.

Anyone want to chime in and address it?

EDIT: added caveat re: Competition Vehicles

  • 2 months later...

Small capacitors don't store enough power to cause a fire

Large ones like I have should be fused and treated like a battery in that regard. Either way: don't need to worry about a firw
