Ray's how to double din MOD.

Here is a quick write up on how I do D-din mods in vehicles that came OEM with single din or weird shape radios.

Dodge ram..

First thing is to check clearance in dash for where we want to put the new deck.. Will it fit?

Cool, now we cut open the stock bezel approx. 1/4" bigger than the new radio face. This gives you enough space to bond well once we fill it in.

Also i filled the D shaped voids with abs. Just CA glue those in place to hold them.

All the areas we will be bonding to get sanded down for a good bond.

Next we tape off the deck, a perfect tape job here is crucial.

Place bezel onto deck exactly where you want the finished piece to sit.

Measure a lot!! Be precise.

Then we use duramix plastic repair and fill all voids, use plenty... We will sand it down once it cures.

Once the duramix starts to "take off", or cure...we remove the bezel from our taped up deck. And sand off all excess material.

You will be able to see your tape line in the material and that tells you right where to sand to.

This is why the tape job needs to be perfect.

I use yellow and green 3m automotive refinishing tape.

Use body filler to smooth out any divots and feather it all in.

Great prep here will make all the difference in the end

Next we start laying down paint.

I use SEM trim black, about 18" away in light coats to build up a light texture. Think i looks more factory then gloss.

Once the trim black dries, i switched to satin black for this one.

For the satin finish i spray about 8" away.

If you want a flatter look just spray farther away.

Any excess filler or duramix gets cut off the back side and sprayed black.

Mount radio with metal brackets, i like to use thick backstrap so i can make small adjustments when if needed for placement.

Then reassemble the bezel, put vents back in, and mount in the truck.

It will now sit very flush, and look very OEM.

  • 3 weeks later...

I cut the top and bottom about a 1/4" each.

So its a permanent mod.

But a new bezel is only ~140.00
