Ollierides
Hi all , when making a subwoofer box why do people use two layers of mdf when the subs are ontop ?? when doing this do you mount the sub ontop of both pieces of mdf or do your cut one a wider diameter and have it wrap around the cone surround . Please advise me , thanks
larrys95civic
A double baffle reduces flex caused by the subs moving in and out, box flex is bad. It changes the rise and can cause the box to fall apart. Trey_Dog650
Depends what you wanna do. Some people double up for the strength. Some do it cuz it allows them to flush mount the sub to look better 13 Kia Forte Build! 07 Hyundai Accent Build ***Super Seller*** N8ball2013 And then he gets to say ok all you guys were right. im sorry for being a dummy poo poo head. zxsonnyxz
The most important aspect is strenght, but there's also the looks of having the woofer flush mounted. The only thing that should move and vibrate is the cone of the woofer. If you have vibrations in the box it's going to negatively affect the sound due to bad sounding resonance, and canselation. Sonic
Two layers make it stronger to withstand motor force and prevent sagging due to weight. It is not limited when mounting subs on top alone, it's also done when mounting is done vertical or angular. You can choose to mount the sub on top of both peices or flush mount (larger diameter on top peice) for aesthetics.
Ollierides
So sonic my man , will melting it flush reduce the strength as apposed to mounting it ontop of both pieces ? thanks all
WillPwn4Food
If it's screwed through 2 pieces it will be stronger than if it were screwed through 1 and the other layer goes around woofer. It'll still help a bit, but not as much as if the woofer is screwed through both. Mikey Bates
If you look at some SPL guys they'll go 3-5+ inches thick ...I'm doing 2 and a The third will be flush mounted
Sonic
So sonic my man , will melting it flush reduce the strength as apposed to mounting it ontop of both pieces ? thanks all It all depends on the sub weight, capacity, surface are of mounting baffle, how you secure both peices together etc ... a big ass sub and box would require to use your best judgement and may need even a third baffle or thicker first baffle.
