I made a post over here about different motor designs :

correct me if im wrong but its the way a sub is designed... coil is like 90-100% in the motor gap

thats what i read anyways

i think their a better design for low end frequencies

(take all stated above with a grain of salt till someone else chimes in this is all i remember from reading about it like 7 months ago)

vs what, regular is 50% in the gap?

i dunno if its 50% but i know underhung is the coil is in the gap 90-100%

and i take that back about better low end frequency response

i think the benefit was more sensitive less xmax more power/coil in the gap to control the cone

i also read the cost is higher to produce them over traditional overhung subs

im gonna stop guessing lol

There isn't really a "regular" amount of coil in the gap per-se.

An SA-12 for example has a 45mm coil and 12.5mm top plate so 27% is in the physical gap (not counting fringe field) -- a Z v.3 has a 65mm coil and 30mm top plate so 46% is in the gap.

SD-2 8" is under-hung 12.5mm coil and 25mm top plate -- so has 2x the top plate compared to coil height.

This is my favorite pic out of the whole lot that I took.

I'm gonna throw this out there as a suggestion, and to tell why I like this pic so much. The color of the Sundown logo on the dust cap has a hue that is reminiscent of glow in the dark paint. I think it would be effing bad ass if Jacob offered his subs with glow in the dark logos on the dust cap. Think of how awesome this would be when showing off to the homies at night. Do it Jacob, do it! Just a thought. :)
