How to determine what alt+battery bank you need

Recommended Posts

Ok, im in a debate with my bro.. I used this vid to determine how to calculate what amout of battery/alt amperage i needed in order to get 3400 real watts total out of my amplifiers.

Its a video from maxxsonics, it seems logical to me, but my brother said its not correct. Specifically the part on amp efficiency and how to calculate what watts it needs to be given to have a output of its rms rating. ie having an 70% efficient 1000 watt amp and needing to "supply it" with an electrical setup thats suited for 1428 watts... since the amp will only efficiently use 70% of its given power.

Heres the link .

Let me know what you all think is right or wrong in the tuturial.

also helps to know if your gonna be burping tones or pure daily music

down rpping vanderbilt. 30 miles from victoria. i own the 3rd loudest setup here out of 3. but i did put together all 3 setups

^^ Cant wait to swalllow Ghost's babies

Sounds right to me, although, if iirc, most class D amps are around 70-75% efficient? Not 80..even though he did admit that 80% efficiency was really high for most amps

1. First I got a number of total watts I want for my system.

Amp 1 2900

Amp 2 200 watts

Amp3 >100

So I rounded up to 3300 target watts.

2. Amps roughly function between 70%(normal class a/b)-80%(class D amps) efficiency.

So 2900 / 80% = 3625 watts, this is what I need to be capable of producing to get 3300 real watts out of amp 1.

300 / 70% = 428 watts needed. Totalling 4053

3. Take 4053 watts and divide that by the voltage it will run off of on “average”. I assume I won’t be functioning at a perfect 14.4 volts.. that’s hard to maintain while music is wangin’. So I used 13.0 Volts as a safe medium to use.

4053 / 13V = 311 amps. THIS is the number of amperage I need to supply via alternator + battery bank to be capable of getting my desired 3300 watts.

4. stock alt is 100A. Stock electric for normal car use is about 40% of that = 40A. So from there I calculate

260A ( upgraded alt) + 150 AH ( Battery bank of two 75 ah batteries) – 40 A ( car usage) = 370A

I have enough amperage (311 needed, 370 supplied) to supply to my system to create 3300 usable real watts.

Its going to be daily of course.. im not burping a sp4 15 with 2900 watts. Its swallow that hole, no burp!

And who is Mike from maxxsonics supposed to be? Mike stiers or mike Benz? Google says one of these men are supposed to be world record SPL holders of some sort? class? I cant click on too many foreign links @ work.
