EricM9104
preamplifier clipping wont do anything to harm a driver like a cd or radio correctbut suppose that clipped signal goes into an amplifier wont it just come out as an amplified clipped signal? i cant grasp the concept that clipping from an underpowered amp wont kill ur sub alright lemme give u a scenario u have an 18" BTL, it can handle loads of power... if u have a 500w amp and u have the gains turned up all the way up it wont be putting out the 2000 rms needed by the sub correct? and ur tellin me that the BTL will not be harmed? Megalo and Micky i need this to be very clear. help me pleez Wouldn't sending a clipped signal to an amp kill the amp after a while? About the BTL thing, yes. It'll be harmed as the amp is trying to put out more power than it safely can and will send a clipped signal to the sub. aquill1
I think they said it would take a long while to hurt the sub though. My question would be what's the point in spending the money on a 2000rms sub and only getting a 500 watt amp?

may03LT
-dirty signals can come from music, the headunit or the gains of the amplifier Amen! I was quite suprised to find that my deck started clipping at 60% volume. Good write up. SOOOOOO I got a questionI have a Rf T3000 and 18"BTL with all the options and dual 2ohm coils wired in Parralel. I followed the amplifier gain tutorial and set the maximum voltage @ 61.7 Roughly 3700 watts.I set this with the HZ @ 50 and the Bass knob ALL the way up with the deck volume on 3/4,Playing a 60Hz Test Tone. How would I know if my speaker is clipping if the BTLs are known to handle more than 3k (Best example Steves Tahoe) and im right on the money when i set the voltage/gain comin from my amp? Hey i cant really answer your question but Im sure youre supposed to have the bass knob all the way down when you set the voltage. Thats how i set my T2K1. The bass knob is a little over halfway up, any more and it is clipping.
aquill1
I was going to say that's like seeing all these cars with a couple grand in rims with a car not road worthy! I love seeing that stuff! LOL!!!

Guest MegaloManiac
yes. clipping itself will not harm your driver. Overpowering a driver will. Because you will reach the thermal and mechanical limits of the driver....
nauc
clipping will only ruin a speaker if its too much power for the speaker an amp that puts out 100 watts, at full clipping, is LIKE putting out 2x the power (200 watts) but if its hooked up to a 500 watt sub, it wont hurt the sub and if you understand that, youll understand how a 75 watt amp CAN cook a 100 watt speaker Quote Alpine 9887, Oz 180CS, RF R500X1D, 12" RE SE
