Bboytaktix's 2011 Subaru STI Modest SQ build

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Joined this forum way back when I had my first car (2001 civic 4-door), noob build in there and learned a lot, then a much better build in my 2009 cobalt base model, but recently traded that in for a car I've always wanted, 2011 Subaru STI. Took my equipment from my cobalt but not everything is going into the STI. Bought it slightly used (only 30k kilometers on the odo)

I have changed over the years, I am no longer a huge audiophile I once was but still appreciate a very nice system. I am going for strictly SQ build but with a good punch to it and can get decently loud. I had some other members answer pretty much all the questions I had in another thread, so thanks for the info!!!

Well first off, here's some pics of the car when I first picked it up from the dealer;

After I gave it a full detail and some debadging;

Now, onto the audio goodies. The rear speakers in my cobalt were 6x9 but the STI has 6.5 in the rear doors so the 6x9 are for sale and had to order some 6.5 for the rear doors. Also, my JBL GTO 1214D subs in my vented enclosure are just way too big for my trunk, I want trunk space, especially if I want to hear up north with friends for a weekend of skiing, so I want at least one side of fold-down seats available to me.

Here is the list of what will be going in the STI;

HEAD UNIT: Pioneer x850BT (bought it new for the STI)

Harness: SVDX's (David) harness for subaru (ae64.com)

Other: Metra Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel control harness

Front: JBL P660c components (from last build)

Rear: JBL P662 "fillers" (Ordered, on their way)

4ch AMP: JBL GTO1004 4-channel amp (150RMSx4 at 2ohm, from last build)

SUB: JBL W10GTI (about to order today :D) in sealed 0.75 cubic foot box

Mono AMP: Clarion DPX11551 (1550wRMS at 2-ohm or 850wRMS at 4-ohm, from last build)

SUB BOX: custom made by me :D

ELECTRICAL: knukonceptz KCA 1/0-gauge power kit, Karma SS 4-ch RCA cable

Chose the W10GTI because I've always wanted the GTI series subs and after doing research, most said it's a very solid and well-rounded sub. Also, my amp should be perfect for it, hooked up at 3-ohm it should put out around 1000-1200RMS which should be more than enough.

FIRST UPDATE:

First thing I ordered and installed was the head unit and install accessories. The install went pretty smooth. I got the ASWC harness as well to keep steering wheel controls functional with the new head unit. I also got the JDM STI bezel that perfectly contours the double din screen (shipped straight from japan!) I decided the JDM bezel was too bland so I cf-wrapped it to make it pop a bit more. PICS;

FRONT COMPONENT SPEAKER INSTALL:

Had time last weekend to install front speakers. I also had like 25-30 sq ft of fatmat left from my last build so I put what I could in the doors.

old vs new tweeter;

Tweeters mounted in stock sail pods. Had to modify them slightly but overall a pretty good fit and pretty easy install;

Right now they are running off the head unit, they sound better than stock of course but nowhere near their full potential when they will be amped :D

SO FAR: Order for P662 rear speakers as well as KnuKonceptz wiring/install stuff was made this past week. Patiently awaiting its arrival in the mail. Also, had a conversation with the eBay seller aout the w10GTI, he's hooking me up with a decent deal shipped to me in Canada, so I'm going to be purchasing that tonight. Hopefully won't take too long to get here. Then I wil have to start thinking about box design

MORE UPDATES TO COME WHEN I GET MORE WORK DONE!!! hope you are enjoying my modest SQ build thread.

Very nice. I had a 2012 STi. I had always wanted one. I've since traded it in on a BMW 135i and haven't missed it one bit. But it's a bad ass ride for sure.

I wish I'd known you were building one. I still have a bunch of shit from my build leftover from it and no one to gove it to. Lol.

damn dude that's sick! what do you have left over? Also, thats funny you talk about how you traded to a 135 and never look back. On IWSTI forum, a lot of ppl had BMW's (1 series, 3 series, etc) and actually switched back to STI's for that rawness of power...I'm curious, what do you like about the 135 over the STI? I bet your 135 is sexy as hell though. I saw a practically new M3 last weekend and was admiring how nice an ass it had!!! maybe my next car lol

UPDATE: Just bought the W10GTI. Shit's expensive! $380 shipped (works out to like $400CAD). They're rare now, don't make em anymore I guess. And didn't find any local used ones either for less. This sub better perform well :D

Alright so tomorrow I should receive my package from KnuKonceptz according to tracking, pics to come once I pick it up.

I've been struggling with ideas for what I should do about a subwoofer enclosure. Basically I will be going with a sealed enclosure for this sub, recommended volume is 0.75ft^3 but I have heard people run a bit bigger like 1ft^3 and it sounds great. Not sure what would sound best. The important thing is a clean install and keeping a good amount of space in my trunk. Also being able to open at least one of my rear seats to pass snowboard etc through for those winter months.

Right now I have two main ideas;

1) build a simple sub box out of MDF that basically fits/sits right in back of my passenger rear seat (only one side), aimed towards trunk of course.

2) fiberglass a corner trunk box.

My trunk is a bit funny, the space right behind rear seat is higher and slopes down to the space that is at the rear of the trunk;

STItrunkdimensions_zps7c71521a.png

here's a pic of an STI sedan trunk to see what I mean (but mine is all automotive carpet);

wrx09trunkmat2.JPG

Also trying to figure out where to mount the amps so they are out of the way. I would like them to be on display somehow but really not sure how I could do that without taking up lots of space. Maybe on the side wall somewhere? Otherwise I can mount them inverted on the trunk roof, out of sight.I guess it depends on where I decide to put the sub.

Any input on this would be appreciated, thanks!!

Nice ride bro! I'll be checking this thread since I also have an '11 REX (not an STi, but I love it!) I'm in E-town, AB -- you? Might have to hit you up for some advice since you're further ahead than me.

thank you man! I actually almost went for a brand new WRX, but deep down I knew I wanted the STI and wouldnt be quite as happy with the WRX since I'm kinda a hardcore car guy. Plus, I found the perfect, slightly used STI with only 30,00kms on it for a bit less than a new WRX would have cost me so it all worked out :D

And yeah no problem, I will help you as best I can!! Head unit was easy install but harness to keep steering wheel buttons is expensive to buy here in Canada :( Also I'm from Montreal, Qc., so not too close to you :P
