Recommended Posts

Hey looking to build a solid hard maple sub woofer box. Thickness of maple will finish out at 1.75 thick. Interior will have 6 coats of lacquer finish along with the outside. Port will be constructed out of Hickory. Wonder what it will sound like. This is going to be a butcher block design to keep the boards from moving. Been doing wood working for 32 years know all about wood and movement. Box is going to loaded with 1-Orion 10.4 HCCA woofer.

1.25 sq.

4.5x4.5x9.5 port size.

That is why I am only doing 1. Plus that is how I enter it in competitions also. Hit 135db with 1 ten.

Cannot wait till December to get my HCCA amp from Orion. They called last week and told me I will be the first to try one!

The good thing is, when you go to re build after, you'll have the maple AND the hickory you can just throw the scraps into a smoker and get some tasty Baby back ribs :)

To answer your question, it's a hardwood so it should work just perfectly fine. Hugh G. Rection is a cabinet maker I believe, or he's around wood all day(hehe) and he'd be a good person to contact and pick his brain.

Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.

i wouldnt build it out of hard maple personally. hard maple glued like a butcher block damn sure wouldnt flex a bit, but the resonant and tonal properties of it are what i would be wary of. if it were me personally, in order to get a good compromise of workability, resonance, tonality, and flex resistance id probably just go with something more like white poplar. if you really wanted to use maple though i would use soft maple. soft maple is still plenty tough enough and wont split as easily as hard maple when you put fasteners in it, but it wont have the same tonal properties of some poplar.

companies that build high end guitar speaker cabinets, PA cabinets, and home theater cabinets use poplar alot.
