97 Hyundai Tiburon build from ramming to slamming (Slow 5k build)

Recommended Posts

In for an sql build. The plan is to do 4 12" on 5k? You will need a kickass front stage to keep up with the output. Have you thought about some pro audio gear? If you run an alpine 701 you can get make magic with them. I can recommend some gear depending on your budget to get you started. Have you done any fiberglassing before? It might be easier to to try to do 2 6" in the doors. Unless your car has some big kicks. Coupe's are already tight on leg room. I would wait on the rear speakers until you get the front done. I'm not against rear fill but it isn't always necessary.

I would grab some closed cell foam/ neoprene, and some mlv as well. With that much subbass you will be chasing a few rattles and these products will help kill them.

No I have never done fiberglassing yes space is tight but have a buddy that works on fiberglassing boats told me he could build me some kick panels. want to do doors but never done it and heard its expensive to have shop do It. What do u mean by closed cell foam ? going to start deading the trunk with 20 sqft of sspro that I have. My goal is to deaden the majority of the car have never done whole car so should be fun and interesting. Want to first after I use my deadener and get Vr804 fixed. Any ideas on comps for front. Head pro audio not good sq also noob at building crossover networks. Like I said any input is appreciated. Basically if you could school me on building a 5k sql car. Thanks

It is expensive to have a shop to do it. If your friend can build you some kicks he can do some doors. They would probably be easier to build too. Closed cell foam is used as a decoupling layer. You can use it door panels too to prevent resonance and rattles. A lot of making a loud vehicle that sounds good is getting rid of the rattles and panels buzzing. The myth about pro audio being bad at sq is bs. I have horns and a 12" full range and my setup sounds awesome. If you are around the northwest suburbs I could give you a demo. If you get a high end alpine processor you can control all the speakers active. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I am in rolling meadows. My current setup does low 40's; so that could give you a good indication of what an sql setup is like. It is active and tuned with a 30 band eq. I can play you a track with the settings on and off so you can see the difference eq makes. In a system with pro audio it is necessary.(EQ) If you want it to sound as good as you can. I only listen to a little rap so it has to be well balanced.

sounding good is pretty subjective. ive personally never heard a pa setup that sounds worth a damn (I've certainly never lost to a pa setup in my years of competing in sq) but, ultimately your ears will tell you what sounds good to you. some love metal dome tweets, some think they get to shrill. others think fabric dome sound too "muted" or "muffled".

processing and running active is the way to go for ultimate tunability though!

edited to add: im not attacking you, nor am I saying your setup sounds bad! just an alternate counterpoint

You're position is almost hostile. lol I don't want to start a debate about it in Rick's thread but I will say that I am familiar with the tenants of an sq system and what is necessary to achieve it. I don't believe I am deluding myself about "what sounds good to me";when it comes to what a stereo should sound like either with respect to imaging, tonality, stage depth and width, etc. I use horns that were very popular in sq cars in the late 90's. (Eric Stevens, The Holdaways, Harry Kimura) I used their cars as a template when I rebuilt mine. With the eq, cost of components, and fabrication I have close to a grand in my frontstage and it's sound reflects that.

If you want we can continue the debate on this thread that was started specifically for this subject. You could give a couple examples of pa setups you competed against and your setup at the time. Also, where your system excelled in comparison to the pa setup.
