What causes a blown/ripped cone?

Recommended Posts

So I just took off my front door panels to install some sound dampening, and I realized that BOTH speakers on BOTH sides have blown/ripped cones. They are ripped at the top, foam layer around the cone. Why did this happen? They are not cheap speakers either.. JBL P 963s.. SO now I obviously need to purchase new front speakers, and I don't want this to happen again. Any thoughts?

Did you get that scar tissue when you got your vagina installed?

Running full range and probably too much power, i had a set of polk MM 691's and JBL P660c's do the same thing but i was putting a lot of power and playing full range on them. I would high pass them no lower than 60hz but you would be better off crossing over at 80hz to make sure they don't tear again. It seems like polk and jbl have an achilles heel with the surrounds of their speakers tearing from over excursion.

werd.

What type of Xover are you running on them? (im waiting for... "none" ) :)

3.2.1...NONE!! But, My HU has a built in crossover, and I have the front on 120 and the rear on 80.. But, I have had the speakers in for a while and hey were running full range before I added an amp, that will explain when it happened.. Oh well, I guess I need to add new door speakers to my never ending list of audio needs...

Eric... Clipping has never folded a cone, get your shit straight. Overpowering and extreme pressure are the only things that are going to fold a cone, and generally one is followed by the other.

Doors are a harsh environment for foam. I would look at something with rubber or cloth surrounds, as those won't deteriorate like foam does.
