What makes this configuration self balance ?

in the top bank of one of the ones i did, the capacoitors are hooked up in parallel first, then series.

where as in the second pic with black caps, the caps are series first then parallel. in any electrical config, a series connection allows for a voltage in balance. where as paralled connections will have same voltage. think about how you connect batteries. you parallel them so you have the same voltage.

So if I hook a 12.3 volt battery in parallel with a 13.1 volt battery and resulting voltage is now 12.7 you are gonna say the 12.3 volt battery has no bearing on the overall capacity LOL

That config is NOT self balancing, unhook all the caps and check voltage on them after you do a 1000 amp pull on the bank

Just to clarify, the caps that are parallel are balanced with each other cuz same voltage, but between each series they can't be, nothing is balancing them so each parallel row of caps is running an different voltages that is what I am getting at.

And like I said before for you since you aren't running at rated voltage doesn't matter much cuz you aren't using the full potential of the bank anyway, running DD can't go over 15.5 lol.

what i am doing is playing the odds. i lay all my caps out and randomly choose 8 caps. since they are all within 20% tolerance i am betting that 8 caps create a bank that is near thier rating assuming 4 will be over tolerance and 4 will be under tolerance. thus if we get near rated caps, the series connections will be limited to a very small difference thus in a sense self balancing via parallel banks and trying to get near <1% tolerance in the parallel banks so when i series them there isnt much difference.

if you watch my videos i successfully burped all my dd amps from 15.7 volts. im not really sure where they shut off at lol. either way, after thinking about it, i guess in parallel they would be not to full capacity but i am playing the odds so at most they would be 10% of their max which is still plenty.

To an extent...I'd still run a battery or 2....last thing you want is to be at a show 100 miles away and have your alt crap out and then try driving home on just caps.

But that's the issue. Batteries rely on a chemical reaction to produce current. If that chemical reaction is depleted or in one form or another interrupted, your current flow stops as well. Capacitors rely on a difference of electrons. They will produce current regardless of their resting voltage. You're comparing two things that really can't be in any way compared

You're misunderstanding what I meant.

Each capacitor in the row, due to how they are bussed together, will be self balancing with it's neighbor, because they are all wired in parallel. The wiring is such that you only need to worry about balancing 6 rows of caps, vs 48 of them individually
