Bump4life's SuperCapacitor Overview and Testing

Recommended Posts

Looks like it helped! did you hook it up before or after the battery in reverse line from the amplifiers? First being inbetween the amp and the battery.

Looks like 1 or two of those might need to be in my future.

edited ato show. will do testing with placement of caps in system but it really shoudnt matter much. the voltage drop of wire would be only difference

Have you done testing at all in regards to placement before/after batteries?

The downside of using batteries and caps is the potential difference. Caps stay at the charging voltage even when not being charged. Batteries drop back down to resting voltage. So what you get running both is the alt charging the caps which charge the batts and essentially render them useless because batteries love being charged and will take quite a bit of power. Now that being said using caps without batteries means you need more charging to keep the voltage in a safe range, but this is in turn a good thing because let's be honest running 10k on a couple batteries and an upgraded alt is not proper electrical. Caps are better than batteries given you have the ability to properly run the power you have. They do fine for daily as long as you can charge them correctly and have enough reserve for your power.

So, is running caps with batteries pointless? And would placement in the circuit of the caps make a difference here?

Say I had a buss bar, and I had batteries, amps, caps, and front to rear positive and negative wiring to pump into the buss bar. Posts on the batteries, so I can't change their location. Would I want wire runs>>caps>>batt 1>>amps>>batt 2+? There's so many possibilities, seems like I need to pick some up and do some testing. If only I had spare cash :/

there is advantages to using them together and seperate. it all depends oin the goals of the system and also alternator power

Ahhh I wish you would be more specific lol.

Ok, as an example, my system. DC 5k, 270A alt, goal is daily music only, I never burp it. Have 2 group 31's plus under hood battery right now if that matters at all.

pretty much, ask yourself, do I play with the car off? if not, then no need for batts. maybe 1 at most for less experience individuals. the reason i say this is because with capacitors, when you run them without a bat in the car you are at the mercy of leakage, if you want a completely worry free system, id stick a single battery in stock location with them. But if you are good at watchign voltage and you know the leakage of them, then you can experiment without a bat.

currently i dont have a bat in my car, but a future plan is to put a bat in on a switch for emergency use only.

I plan on updating this periodically since more and more people are using them and asking me the same questions. Ill break it up into sections with more pictures and testing. Hope you all enjoy!!

any battery charger or power supply would be fine to charge the caps. They key is the resistive circuit. You need the resistors other wise your charger will go into its short protect mode, or if you dont have short protect then it will break. and youll be buying a new charger.

the ones you ordered are good. for 30 dollars more you can get new ones though... those ebay ones are used as you can see in the description

those balancing circuits are active. they will do nothing in most peoples systems especially if using the blue caps. once i add the balancing section it will be clearer

No, never play with the car off. Thanks for the info. Been really wanting to try these out, just can't seem to find the cash to get them since I don't need upgrades now. I'm the type that can't read enough about something before I do it. Love this thread. Thanks for taking the time.

If you are using blue caps and only run up to let's say 15.5 volt max then you don't need balancing circuits BUT if you plan on running let's say 17.0 volt on 6 blues per bank then balancing is a must.

how do you run 6 caps at 17? dont you need 7 in a bank?
