Setting up big computer build + home theatre

Recommended Posts

So I got a promotion today, had been expecting it for a while. And for the past few years, I had told myself once I got a decent job, I would finally get a gaming rig. So now is the time to start planning this bitch out. I can build it all myself no problem, I am a service technician anyways. My only thing is, I am not super up to date with what the latest and greatest is. I recently checked out the newest addition to Intel, haswell technology. Looks nice, and I will take part. This topic is really for opinions on what would be best for what I am desired in doing. And to help with deciding what companies are better in what areas, like RAM, HDD, and what not. Also to take a look into how I will integrate my surround sound I want to custom build. I plan on getting 4 bookshelf speakers, center channel, and either a powered sub or build a enclosure for one. Will more than likely do the latter. Along with that I will have a stereo to power it all, that's where my main question comes in. Is that the best set up for a surround sound? Or am I better off getting a high end sound card with 5.1 built in? My second question starts with my monitors, I am going to do a triple monitor set up, and down the line will be running 4 displays. A TV for movies and such. While running the triple for daily use and heavy gaming. What monitors are good to look at, I remember in a old topic I had made someone mentioned getting monitors with IPS paneling. Is that still the best or is there something new out now? Along with that being said, I know I will need to run dual GFX cards, but will only have 1 in the very beginning due to this costing a bunch. What would be an ideal set up do you guys think? I would like to run around 16GB of ram, possibly more in the future. And as far as storage, I would like a decent sized SSD for my main and HDD for storage. Any and all help is appreciated. After posting this I am going to go and look around and start piecing this all together.

I came up with this parts list with the help of some people elsewhere.

I have always used corsair ram, maybe check them out, as far as mobo what form factor Atx or micro ATX because for 169.99 you can pick up and Asus Gryphon and it is quad sli/quad crossfire ready, and it's 3.0( I have the board and like it) As far as storage drive I have heard a lot of positive things about the intel solid states and samsung solid states(i think the pro series for the samsung it's called?) and I have always used WD for my storage drive, seagate is meh, and as far as fast ram maybe look into getting 1866 or higher. And as for the SLI or crossfire I have ran both and the only thing about Crossfire you may get some micro stutter in games but nothing to bad, and AMD has stepped their game up on the new drivers. Also make sure the haswell chips support the ram speed you want to run. And one last thing make sure if you want to overclock make sure you have good cooling either a good air cooler, or a custom loop, or a all in one loop, and make sure you get a K series cpu like example: i7-4770k because if you get a non K you won't be able to overclock on haswell. Sorry for the paragraph lol

Thanks for the heads up on the CPU being a K series. I did not know that. As far as ram, what about? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231639 Would that be any faster? It is a higher speed, same latency, higher voltage, and 9-11-11-31. Also for GPU, I would need 2 HDMI a piece if I am to run 2 cards.

the reason I picked the 1600 mhz ram is because if you look on intel's site it says the memory speed supported on the i7-4770k is 1333 and 1600, and you could always do mini display port connections, but those were just to give you some ideas.

http://ark.intel.com/products/75123/Intel-Core-i7-4770K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz?wapkw=i7-4770k (this is the link to the memory support)

And really you could buy 1600 mhz ram and overclock it to, ram speed won't really affect p[performance that much. And if you did want the faster ram I think the 2011 socket which is x79 platform supports up to 1866, but x79 had problems from the begining.

Sweet, see, a link like that is something I looking for. I get ya now, and that is saving me 30 on ram. Also, with using the converter to dvi, would their be a difference in the monitors that are hdmi and the one that is using a converter?

honestly I have HDMI hooked up right now, before I had dvi, and I can't tell the difference, but it you wanted to you could get monitors with a mini display port/display port and hook it up that was or one HDMI and one Display port.

Just find monitors that have HDMI and display port, that way you have different options to hook up.

On a side note if you were you run crossfire/sli , you would have 2 cards, so you could plug hdmi from one monitor onto the top card, and then the other into the second card, and the third monitor could be hooked up via display port.

Yeah, I was seeing if it's possible to have all 3 on HDMI. Well it's no big deal, I seen some I believe with 2 VGA ports. WIll run all that or mini display. My laptop just crashed on a blue screen lol, so I hope this computer comes soon lol. I am going to go update my stuff to show what I am looking at. Anyone else have anything on how I could set up the stereo with the pc?

Edit: also, how is that Z87 only 162. I was looking at another company same board, 260.

Honestly, big. I am going triple monitor and am contemplating 2560x1440 across 3 monitors. That is close to 1k in monitors lol I am comfortable in the 3k area, dont really want to go to much higher than that. But that price is including a fully built tower and 3 monitors.
